depends on the paint underneath

I used Cheveron Perfect Paint and Clear. It is Polyurethane. They sell it in an 11oz rattle can or 8 oz cans for spraying/airbrushing/brushing. Tower has it and it matches MonoKote.

You can shoot poly over enamel, lacquer, etc. I don't think you can shoot lacquer or enamel over poly.

I just finished a scale H500E and used Cheveron Perfect Paints and clear coat. It's really great paint, lays down well, dries fast and is fuelproof and is opaque.

Before I have used Parma FastColor paints(waterbased) and shot LusterCoat Crystal Clear in the spray cann over it on my milk bottle and a fiberglass canopy, it worked great over the Parma.

Clear

Depends on what I am painting. If it is small parts like cockpit stuff, etc I use Top Flite Lustre Kote Clear it is fuel proof. If it is the body of the helicopter I use PPG or Dupont automotive clear like Chroma clear.

You can use Enamel over Lacquer but you have to let the lacquer
dry for a couple of months it may feel dry to the touch and be wetsanded and buffed but if you clear it with enamel the solvents
in the laquer are still drying and may cause the clear to peel, You should always use a clearcoat base color as it has been formulated to accept the clear of the same kind if its not a clearcoat base wait for the paint to dry for about a month then wet sand with 2000 grit paper and shoot the clear on. Poly clearcoat should be used with a poly paint but can be applied over laquer after a month
to let the vapors dry you will still need to prep the laquer as above.

I use PPG Deltron. I use a basecoat then a 3 part clear. 30% wont even touch it. I use it on my pod and booms as well. It's very pricy. But it is known to be the brightest. About $35 to $55 per pint. Then the clear runs about $95 per quart.

If you have several projects to paint you would get a better deal by buying a gallon or 3/4 gallon I have found that the price of a gallon can cost about as much as a quart so your better off buying more especially the clear you can use that on any of your projects and if you clean the cover very well and dont thin the product in the can it will last quiet some time you can buy the good clear and then use a color from a spray bome can as a base coat as long as they are compatible always do a test on a piece of scape first. Clear urethane can be used over almost every type of basecoat or color coat as long as they are prept properly(flashed of drytime)
The clear is actuly the product that gives it depth and strenght and the color coat is just for color the auto industry started using clearcoat as a cheaper way to paint cars sense the color is more expensive they have to use less of it .Urethane came out after the acid rain was staining the surface coats so they needed a product that could stand up from the fallout besides the EPA taking elements out of the paints.\
Dupont Imron was the first to introduce it in the late 70's.
