Is it easier to fly in FFF in wind than it is to hover? It's so windy here in central Texas, I have to take my planes out to fly but I want to fly the real deal, my helicopter. I tried hovering in the wind ther other day and it was hell. Will I be able to fly in higher winds if I get into FFF? Do the helis treat the wind like the planes in FFF?

It depends on the gusts

When I was starting out, the wind, especially if it was gusty, would really kick my a$$!

Like most things with learning helis, the more I did it, the easier it became. Now, it's fun to fly in anything except a really gusty wind.
Autos are better and if you get a smooth, steady wind, it can be cool to see the heli hovering at a noticable tilt, essentially in forward flight but motionless.

Just burn more fuel

Don't worry, the wind will calm down soon here. In another month, you will be looking for the wind to cool off. As a rule, the 60's handle the wind better than the 30's. Where do you fly your heli? Most of us fly over there at Lyons Park off Stan Schlueter Loop Sat mornings and Sun evenings.

I have been to the club out by the lake but I am not big on the club atmosphere. My brother and I flew a plane out at that park a few days ago. We will come out tomorrow morning if you guys are going to be there. I have a Nexus 30 and he has an electric ECO 8 (not good in wind!). I am just dying to get into foward flight.

If you gotta fly you gotta fly. I've flown in 35mph winds at night talk about fun. It's the ultimate. Why you ask? Well if you have new night fly gear it just has to be used. And no I didn't even dump it.

good hover proctice time

great time 2 practice your hovering skills in all directions/when u get that hollow feeling in your stomach u will discover how much practic u actually need to get a 360 degree authoritative hover and like i told u before, until u get that it is pur foolish to attempt forward flight, just save yourself the grief and anguish of the assured disorientation and stay on the ground with the training gear on and face your hover demons all 360 of them and youll thank me later!

I flew last sunday, it was windy, and it was a test flight on my buddies raptor that he dumped, the thing flew flawless thank god... it has a 401 gyro and even the wind spun it around 360 degrees, that'll put some hair on your a$$ when your not ready for it!
