I was watching a video of this heli, got posted in the main discussion today sometime. I noticed its tail rotor is canted about 15 degrees to one side. Why ?

Hi WMac,

The CH-53 you're referring to, the CH-53E SuperStallion, is a larger version of the CH-53D. The tail rotor has five blades and is as large as the main rotor of the Hughes 500. As you know with our small scale birds, the tail rotor is used to offset torque, but the horizontal thrust form the tail rotor forces the helicopter to tilt and drift sideways. (With our clockwise rotors, our helis tilt right and drift left. Full size American-made heli main rotors rotate counter-clockwise and tilt left and drift right.)

The torque on the CH-53E is so huge and the tail rotor thrust so great, that the tail-rotor was angled down to the left to impart a slight torque to the fuse to offset some of the left tilt.

It's a big mama.

I work on the less cool Air Force version of the H-53. We have the tail rotor that is straight up and down vs. the offset one that the CH-53 E and D models. The Marines and Navy operate the echo models and let me tell ya, they have some power!! They really need that tilt when they pull power! Plus, they have one more engine than we do. Ashley is wrong though, the E model tail rotor still has only 4 tail rotor blades. I'll dig up some pics.

Here's the Air Force version. I don't have any of the E model but here's a site where you can go see a vid of the E model.

Thanks for explaining that Ashley, now I understand.

Two of these flew past my house together once at about 200 feet, they're HUGE! Dunno if they were E or D versions though.

Nice vids HeliNerd

heh heh, I asked this exact same question in a post a few months ago....but got a different answer:

the tail is tilted down to allow for more load weight to the rear of aircraft.

FYI, we had some serious problems with the tail trany's when we first got these in Marine Corps, actually had to ground them for awhile.
Also is has 3 turbines for power.

Only 4 blades on the CH-53E tail rotor. The middle photo does a good job of showing the tilt of the tail rotor. The bottom photo is just too cool to pass up. -Steve

Oh yeah, I forget to mention that the tail folds up on the CH-53E as well. It is amazing how "small" such a large heli
can be made when all folded away. -Steve

Gotta love the marines!! Those guys get all the cool stuff. Helicopter wise, the Air Force gets the shaft on power, but more cool toys up front. I have worked on them for 4 years now, and i always have a challenge. Can't wait for the V-22!!

why??? the flying death trap rushed to production so some full bird would make general?? all those unnessisary deaths.. i would rather fly on a kite.
built by the lowest bidder.. using cheap materials.. then flown 3 times over the designed "service life" i really dont want to get started on that subject......................................
