What are the methods to suppress RF noise on a gasser?

Hi guys,

I accidentally posted this in the For Sale Forum, so here it is again.

I noticed while finally getting my gasser (G23 engine) to run somewhat, that this seemed to cause some RX interference. The servos were very jittery.

When range checked with the antenna collasped, and engine shutdown, I get over a hundred feet range. The RX and TX batteries are fully charged.

I use a deans base loaded antenna and I've grounded the RX to the engine.

Anything else I should do?

Thanks,

Tim.

shielded cap

You could use a Bosch shielded cap which captures and grounds a lot of the interference coming from the plug. Just so happens I bought one too many from Vario. If you want it let me know, it's NIB and I can send it snail mail at a discount from whatever they cost (I think about $12). You will see these pretty much all the time on the gas planes. Very easy to do a clean install. You can also put a small hose clamp around it to make a 100% won't come off connection. I've used them on all my gassers.

Also, PCM is a must and make sure you are using a plug with a resistor, like the ones that come with the engines new.

I've never heard of grounding the RX to the engine?

Stet,

Thanks for the response.

I bought the engine used (but nearly new) so I do not know if the resistor is installed or not. How can I check this?

I'm using a PCM receiver, a JR 649 9-channel.

Someone suggested running engine ground to the RX ground via a servo lead with the signal and positive wires removed. It makes sense.

Does the shield really make a difference? If so, I may take you up on the offer.

Thanks,

Tim.

I've never heard of grounding the engine to the RX, and I thought the whole idea was to isolate them from each other. I've never done it on mine and had no problems (except vibration killing servos when the engine was not tuned right). I think you will find that the glitching will stop when you disconnect this. I could be wrong, bit this sounds like a bad thing. I recommend you give Ron Lund a call at www.ronlund.com (Rick's heli) he would know if this is appropriate or what, and will be glad to set you straight. Also, Bill Meador seems to be the current expert on smooth running gassers lately, not sure of his email address, but he is always willing to give good advice.

The standard plug that comes with the Zenoah engines is a Champion RCJ4. The R means resistor. Many like the BRM7A plug (I forget the MFR, I use 'em in y motorcycle, considered the best brand for that).

Myself I have standardized on the Bosch resistor plug and matching Bosch cap (Tight fit). This is vario's standard, is the highest quality and does not have the screw on tip (can come loose and glitch). Get a quote on the Bosch plug and Bosch cap and I can send you one of each brand new at 20% off what they quote you, padded envelope snail mail. You might be able to find a price in an online Vario catalog. I'll go $20 for the pair shipped to ya (unless my number is off). I'm at 310-560-4670, currently on disability and out of work and am clearing out excess redundant stuff.

Good luck,

Stet

I had a glitching problem on a PHI Hurricane. One of the things I tried was grounding everything includidng the receiver. It glitched terribly with the receiver grounded. At idle the servo's were twitching like mad. I cut the ground wire to the receiver, and the twitching stopped. BTW, the glitching was caused by the tail rotor pulley rubbing against the tailcase.

Ignition

All you really need to use is a resister plug.

The shielded cap was intended for using non-resistor plugs, and isn't really necessary.......obviously it won't hurt anything if its something you want to use.

Depending on exactly how the ignition coil mounts, you may also want to install a wire from the ground lug on the coil, to the crankcase of the engine. Some of the mounting schemes have the coil mount to anodized parts or the coil actually mounts to something else, not directly to the engine. Over time, this connection can get dirty, and arc, and other bad things. The direct wire ends that possibility.

You certainly can also ground the receiver, although if you have to do that to stop serious glitching, there's probably another problem somewhere else that this is just covering up.

Glitches

On my Z230, I have the stock plug boot, but on the Z230 they run a extra
ground wire from the screw that mounts the ignition modual to the mounting screw of the engine. I have a Champion resistor plug as well.
I'm running a JR10x pcm radio. I get no glitches with engine running,
and more ground range than a 100 ft. I'm running the antenna away from engine and done on skids, then out to back. Check if you are are
using ground and don't ground RX.
