I was watching videos on Augustoheli.com and noticed clip named Navy helicopter crash. A big US navy helicopter was trying to land on a ship but it got stuck on a railing(?) and bounced to the water. It was pretty horrible to see. I wonder what happened to those guys on board? It seems like one is trying to get out from a window.

It's a bad video, hated seeing it go down becuase of such a thing. God knows how the pilot must of felt when he realised he was stuck and the only way to recover would be to fly back over the carrier which would of been a bad idea as well.

Here's a link courtesy if Augusto:

Actually i think they all survived but the crew chief.

My two cents

I am a C-130 guy by trade but we get to here about all the mishaps Military wide. I believe the CC and the FE were killed. Not sure which one was in the window calling the distance abpove ship. I also remember something about them being fully loaded and loosing 1 engine. If that was the case and the sink rate was that extreme they would have been better off ditching in the ocean. One other tid bit if you are heavy and loose an engine and have altitude then forward flight is your friend and a hover would be next to impossible. Seeing the video again it looks like he was trading the two and lost. There is another video floating around of a Sea Stallion (53) that lost a tail rotor in a hover landing on a ship and that one will make your hair stand up. I am sorry I cannot provide it but Yahoo might.

It's a H46. Full load of about 20 Marines on board. The pilot was known to be a bit of a Hotdog flyer. You can see he's coming in too fast and pulls up hard to slow down. The rear end dipped low and the port mainmount got caught in the safety net. When he pulled collective to climb, the wheel pulled the heli over. At least 12 marines were able to swim out underwater, the rest, along with the pilot and CC, drowned. The water survival course with the helo dunker saved those 12 marines.
As a result of this accident, all safety netting on Navy ships is now lowered when helos are landing/taking off.
P.S. The helo dunker is a big metal cyclinder with a few windows cut out. Inside are 10 seats with seatbelts for you and your 'shipmates'. You get assigned a random seat. Then the cyclinder gets thrown into a deep pool. It flips upside down and you have to get out and swim to the surface. To pass you have to do it right three times. The third time you wear a blindfold.

Thanks for that info Fritz and Dave. It's good that the barrriers/netting are lowered now as I thought it would be hard enough for the pilot to land a such a heli on a carrier without having to get around obstacles. Suppose they're trained for it of course, but still not an easy job.

My dad did that helo dunker course at the big base in Fleetwood, UK before he started work on the oil rigs. Apparently it's so real and cold that your adrenaline is the only thing that gets you out to start off with. Must be a great life saver though.

How do they prevent drowning when using the dunker??

I'd crap myself doing it blindfolded...

This unfortunate crash happened a couple of years back off of the coast of California. Here's a link to the previous RR thread where it was discussed.

http://runryder.com/helicopter/t26325p1/

The crash is a great example of "settling with power", followed by "dynamic roll-over" when the port aft mount got caught in the cat walk. These situations are both very real and very deadly phenomenons.

And as a prior Marine CH-46 pilot, I've spent many a happy hour in the helo-dunkers... ok, maybe "happy' isn't quite the word I was looking for...

The real story

After reading everyones remarks on this helicopter crash, I felt the need to find out the truth! First of all, it was a Marine Helicopter, not a Navy one! The event happened December 11, 1999, off the coast of California, during an exercise, and the pilot was flying in fast to insert Marines on the deck of the USNS Pecos to take over the ship. In all there were 11 survivors, and 7 killed. 1 of killed was a Navy Corpsman (HM1/E-6), and the other 6 were Marines (GYSGT(E-7), 4 SSGT(E-6), and a CPL (E4). The pilot did survive..

I hope that this resolves any questions anyone might have.
