Aerial Photography and Video > vibration an issue?

For the first few test images, I noticed they were not very good.....

For right now, ( testing ) I am just strapping my current 2.1MP camera on my Raptor with rubber bands and form.

I was wondering to what lengths do you go do to ride virbration, any tips?
I am using soft form, so my camera is not very tight in its rubber band mount.

any tips or advice when mounting this way?

thank you.

Vibration

Hi, I'm no pro on this issue but I will share whatever I know about vibration with you (and hope to learn from you as well).

Basically, there're 2 kinds of vibration. High frequency vibration and low frequency vibration.

High frequency vibration can be solved by adding weights to your camera. The added weights on the camera will resist vibration from affecting your picture. Of course, you will also need to set high shuttle speed and wide angle to minimise the effect. No too difficult to solve.

Low frequency is hard to tackle. The solution is to use the RIGHT mount and there's no straight answer to 'What is a RIGHT mount ?'. If you tighten you camera too much to the mount, the dampening effect will be lost and vibration will sets in. If its not tighten enough, the camera may fall off during flight because the vibation will looses it. You'll need to take many pictues with different tightness (trial and error) to see which offers the best effect.

Hope I've help.

stable hover: thanks for your comments. Right now Im doing just that, trial and error. Right now I am just installing camera on the front of my raptor 30 helicopter with rubber bands and foam. The pictures I have taken so far are pretty blury ( because of vibration I think ) I am unable to adjust the camera shot time. Its automatic.

I am using a 2.1 MP HP camera right now

I would like to get a better camera later and rid my machine of all the vibs I can.

Maybe I will try having the camera not as tight next run.

Great info. thank you.

Mark
StableHover is right on The solution is to use the RIGHT mount to get
ride of virbration high and low
I have the M1 Carbon 30 from Airfoil and my virbration is out of hear
it is Aweomse
Hear is my mount

When I read this post I thought I wrote it!
I did the same thing today with my 2.1 MP HP camera.
At first I just zip stripped it to the back of my z230.The back of the frame has a perfect 45 degree angle at the ground for the back of the camera to sit against.
The vibrations were a bit much. With the engine running the camera was showing a "dead battery" icon even though the batteries were new.

I just went to foam and rubber bands too and have not tried it yet.
Got to dark here in NY.
Tomorrow is gonna be another nice day here so I'll give it a try and see how it goes.

cloudmax :

I first tried the camera mounted on the back of my helicopter, on the tail support rods, because of the 45 degree angle as you mentioned, however because of the muffler ( pointing back toward the tail ) there was way too much smoke in the pictures I snapped. That is when I mounted it tothe front of the helicopter, pointing directly down.

I need to try a different way of mounting it, at least a different tension of bands around the camera, or maybe more form.

I really do not know if a aerial bus. would be useful in my area and a worth while venture so I really cant see getting the RIGHT mount as hawk Eye Skycam is mentioning.

Any tips to find out if a aerial bus. would be worth while in an area?

How did you all find that it was a worth while venture before investing the big bucks and all the time?

thank you.

Yeah,I can see the support rods not being a good place to mount the camera. I have mine mounted to the frame just under where the support rods connect.

With a gasser I don't have to worry about smoke so the rear facing camera is good for me.

With the rubber bands holding it on, my camera is loose enough where I can wiggle it a bit with my hands but it's in no danger of falling off.
I also have foam at all the contact points between the camera and the frame.

I'll let you know how it works out tomorrow.

The Airfoil producs will solve every issue that you have mentioned.

I took the time to make a mount that performed with similar results, I ended uo spending more on materials that a new airfoil system cost, The M1 mounts go for about $399.00 this is literally a "turn key system" The only thing between you opening the package and looking at jaw droping amazing photos, is about five minuets and a quick flight.

I am impressed with the results every time I put the system in the air.

I do it only part time and the systems have paid for themselfs several time over. Money well spent.

You do get what you pay for Flyboy!
I was just foolin around with a camera and a servo seeing what I could get. Blurry pictures is about all!

My crappy 2.1MP camera also shuts off after 3 minutes of no use and you have to close and reopen the lens cover to turn it back on again.
No way to deactivate this great feature.
The foam and rubberbands still made for blurry pictures.
I guess I'll have to pull out the ol' amex if I want to take some quality photos at altitude.

One good thing did come out of this experiment though. The heli was perfectly balanced with the camera on the back of the frames.
guess I needed just a tad more tail weight. Flew great!

M1 30 mount

Do you guys think that the airfoil M1 30 mount would work very well with a fury with an OS61. Would I need to get a thrust bearing. Would the smoke get in the picture alot. What about all the oil that seems to get all over the heli, wouldn't that get on the camera and lense? Could the engine handle the extra weight without overheating.

shield

Say, John, that shields looks like it would work great. Did you make this, or buy it? I cant see it being hard to make on your own.

Vibrations

Hi everybody. I am new to this forum.

I'm flying an observer and I'm going crazy with vibration issues. The seed of that vibrations seems to came from the engine. It is a g231PUH. Any opinion? (I am seriuosly considering to turn my focus on isolated fishing sports)

Thanks,

Svi

On the subject of vibration

After wasting a year on a front mount system with 5 mounts made to fit it I did get the wobble on vid and have some clean still video in slow mo, but then things change and now Ive removed the lot and shooting solo.

The camera does not belong on the front of the heli IMV.
It belongs under the heli.

I made a new mount in about 30 mins, 10 mins of contemplation beforehand over a coffee.

2 bits of alloy flat, 7 3mm ht bolts w nyloc nuts, 2 bits of alloy T section, neoprene pad for vibration, 1 x 5mm ht centre bolt w nyloc nut.

(took cam out to take these pics)
Anyone who has seen my rig before might ask "where the hell has everything gone?"
1.7Kg of it in a plastic bag under the bench.

So down the park for a quick vibe test (expecting it to vibe so did a few quick hovers only) and trim heli with the new quick mount (camera under heli now where it should be according to my theory at this point).

Pickle me grandmother!!
Good to go at 1/250 shutter.
(see EXIF properties of pics above)

Guess that solves that mystery, dont put cam on front of heli and wont have to wrestle vibration.

Soon as weather picks up Ill go find somewhere worth wasting fuel to shoot, Ive had enough of suburban beaches.

Nicely done Mr, looks like you could put the canopy back on and have it look all pretty again too.

Looks good MPA and the shutter speed confirms its a success.

I'm working on going to a 60 size glow at the moment, purely a trial but want to incorporate the downlink and use the Eyetop glasses, just can't find time at the moment to work on it though.

As its carrying the extra weight I think the 60 size will perform better than the Sceadu especially with the incorporation of a co pilot too.

Looking forward to it, in fact I can't wait but its pouring down here at the mo, forecast for a while so no flying :-( Plus the 60 size hasbnt arrived yet.

Wel done and as Julian says, looks much better with its clothes on !!

Hey there Lee

Yep looks better "clothed"
Should be easier to see in the air as well.

Yeah the 60 is the go Ill 2nd that, makes for an easy relaxed fly after time on a smaller heli.

Thinking about eyeglass flight, I might try that stunt on the smaller heli or wait till I get an electric and have the 60 glow spare.

Rain, phew, glad summer is on us here.
But, had a drought year here so we needed it.

2 days of rain here so far from pics above the other day but
looking better maybe tomorrow, good weather starts after Christmas here in Aus then it stays warm for a good spell, its pretty crap now bar the odd day.

Cheers
