My Triton is going back for a REFUND...

I have been waiting to hear some results from a Hobby Services Rep for the last 2 weeks or so. He was going to check some "engineering notes" on the Triton. I have tried to contact him again many times and even left messages!

Most people may be satisfied with their Triton if they are only charging Ni-Cd and Ni-MH cells....but when trying to charge Li-Ion, Li-Po, or Lead Acid cells the Triton is a big dissapointment!

I plan on sending back my charger to Hobby Services for a full refund until Great Planes can put some more time into the charger and have it function correctly. My Triton should not be cutting off at near full charge current when charging Lead Acid Cells! I also can't see why it has to "sense": the battery voltage by temporarily pausing charge current - I believe this is where the problem is. I do not see this happening when charging the Li-Po batteries. If it is in a constant voltage charge state there is no reason to do this....it just confuses things.

I guess Great Planes doesn't want to admit that there is a problem with the Triton because so many have been sold and there already was one recall to correct some problems.

We're sympathetic, but can't you just post this once?

Posting it just once?

I will post it as many times as necessary in order for Great Planes and others to realize that this charger has problems and it shouldn't have been released until they were checked and corrected!

Have a nice day!

I've charged all 4 types of batteries with NO PROBLEMS with my Triton and I have not sent it in for the "upgrade" either.

Now what is the problem with Lead Acid? I charge my 12 volt 7ah starter box battery with no problems at all. Are you charging them too fast? You should not go over 1/4C. So I set it at 1.7 amp charge rate and it does great.

Can you charge the field box 12 v gel cell with the charger powered from a car battery?

You can

You can, but I wouldn't do it without the car runing. Your car battery could be anywhere from 50 to 150 aH. The fastest you can charge a Pb is four hours, so if you want to take the chance of leaving it on for 4 hours in your car, possibly draining the battery, then go ahead.

Make it idiot-proof, and someone will make a better idiot

I've charged batteries all day on my truck w/my Triton without starting the vehicle, and have had no problems at all starting at the end of the day. I usually have a battery of some sort going at any point during the day, my reciever, buddies reciever, transmitters, R/C car pack, glow ignitors, ZAGI pack, and yes gel cells, although it's almost pointless to charge one at the field. I seriously doubt 4 hours would kill your car battery, unless it is already very weak/near death. The better option is to get a hefty 12 volt power supply(do a search for 'power supply, triton' lots of hits) and use that instead.

why dont you just read the directions and learn how to use the freakin thing. ive had mine for 10 months and charge nicads and li-polys. never had an once of trouble with it and i fly quite a bit. in fact the only thing i dont like is its slow at 2.5 amps on the li-polys, however i know its safe that way too so i dont worry about it. there is way too much gripin goin on about this charger.

I think what Rob is saying is that complaining here does have merit, but to labor it tends to shut the "attention" down. Send it back and be done with it.

Supernova all the way....

supernova

Hey Dave, will the supernova charge all of the above?

I have a brand new one but I'm too lazy to read the stats on it!

give me a hand here.

Thanks,

Kenny

It does a nice job on NiCds, lead, and I have heard, but haven't had first hand experience with it charging NiMH. I do not think it will work on LiPol's. It took me a little while to get use to how the menu worked for manually charging my lead acids. Can't get any easier with NiCd's...just plug them in and either push the "up" or "down" buttons depending on what you want to do. Do a search on the NiMh side of the house...I pretty sure you have to mod the cables to and from the charger.
