Gasser Model RC Helicopters > Gas Engine Starting/Running

I'm just purchased an Intrepid Gasser, and I'm having trouble starting it or keeping it running.

I'm using CP14 mixed 32 to 1 with low octane fuel. It's a Zenoah G23, Hanson modified.

The low needle is set to 1 3/8, and the high to 1 1/8. I've also tried 7/8 to 1 turn out on the low, thinking that the engine is too rich.

It is very difficult to start, and when it does, it is for only a few seconds. When I advance the throttle a little, it dies even quicker. I'm not familiar with these type of engines, so its hard to tell if its too lean or too rich. It does seem too lean in that I primed it between aborted starts and it trys to run, but only for a few seconds.

I was able to get it to run once for a couple of minutes, then when I let it settle into an idle, it died and I could not restart. I replaced the plug (NGK BMR7A) and no change. I'm using fresh gas, the engine is very clean, good compression, and the fuel seems to be drawing OK.

I now have a blister on my hand due to pulling the starter cord all day, but I think my biceps are stronger for it now. Maybe I should go back to electric starters.

Can someone help? Let me know if you need any further details.

Thanks,

Tim.

Hey, Darkstar..

I feel your pain. I have a Z23 on my xcell gasser that I'm just now getting sorted out...

It sounds to me like you're flooding the engine for some reason, probably not releated to the needles. If they are set as per the factory, the engine should run, even it they aren't at the perfect settings.

Here's a couple of things to try...

1) take out the spark plug, and open the throttle about 1/8 of the way. Now pull the starter a few times and as you're pulling, observe what comes out of the spark plug whole. If fuel comes spurting out, its WAY to rich. This is a good indication that there is a seal or gasket broken somewhere, and gas is flooding the engine. While the plug is out, hold the plug body against the cylinder head (outside the engine) and pull the starter. You should see a good strong spark that sparks 4 or 5 times per pull...

If there is no gas at all coming out of the cylinder, that's too lean. If there is no spark, it's an electrical problem.

2) Try this: put a clamp on the fuel intake line, and try to start the engine with the throttle cracked open. If you've been flooding the engine (or if it's too rich to start), the engine will slowly lean out over a dozen or so pulls, and will eventually start and run for a few seconds until the fuel is exhausted. If you're quick, you may be able to unclamp the fuel line before it runs out of fuel. If it dies as soon as you unclamp, again, you're flooding the engine, and there's something wrong with the carb.

Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes...

Tim,
If you're sure its not flooded, pull the plate off the carb that has the one screw in the center.clean the rubber "gasket" off with ether or gas and reassemble it.sounds like one of the rubber flaps(check valve) in it is sticking.Call me on my cell phone if you need more help w it.I'm up late.....Ill PM you w it in case you lost it...

Hi Tim,
couple things to check, fuel lines run to the right connections at the carb?
when you installed the carb/stack,did you make sure the hole (theres one) lined up in the insulator with the cylinder and the carb and gaskets?tip: (use a paperclip to keep it all aligned during re assembly)
did you blow ether or fuel/carb cleaner thru the openings in the carb?
dont remove the fuel lines, like a glow engine thats flooded, air in the fuel system will drive you crazy and double the work of catching the problem.
when starting it,prime it a couple times, hold your thumb over the intake, pull it till it fires up then quits, then try to start it w/out choking the carb w the throttle trim set to where it will idle,if it still wont start, bump up the throttle trim till it does,w/o choking it.
call my cell or give me a number where i can reach you Tim.I can talk you thru it if none of the above doesnt work.bill meador can help also if you have time to make the trip,he loves gasser too!

Is this a new engine or a used one? If this is used I suspect the carburator has a problem from sitting for a long time. You might have to get a new carb. www.bergenrc.com

You might try posting this under the Bergen forum because I have seen Chris Bergen answer questions regarding the Intrepid.

By the way, turn on the choke and pull twice, by the third pull it will pop a few times, open the choke and pull again then it will be running. Mine has only failed to start on the 4th pull one time in 50 gallons of gas.

I had a hot Zenoah 23 in a boat, it took me about two hours to get it to stay running (it was to rich) when it was new, when I was done tuning it that day the high jet was screwed out 3/4 of one full turn from seating, so when I told a friend that had a hot 23 in a X-Cell gasser he said this is about where all the hot Zenoah 23s are tuning at,,, I think the number on the carb was w167,,, I think when I was done the low-end jet was screwed out 1 & 1/8 turns, I can't be sure on the low-end jet,,, but I remember thinking that the high jet was to lean but I knew it had to be right because it would not run when it was turnd out more !!

So tell us about the Bergen gasser, I'v been wanting one, a gasser is my goal, if you change your mind and want to sell E me...

keep it up !!
