I don't believe I'd tell that! I did perhaps the dumbest thing I've ever done with a model heli and as I'm always piling on some poor sod who's boobed I thought I'd share it with ya'! I've been toying with gear ratio's on my Futuras...one has the YS80 and the other has the .61. I've also gotten the GY502 and 601 gyros for them and have been working on THOSE set-ups as well...( not to mention the weeks of weather between flights ) ! Add to the confusion a couple of new flyers I'm helping and the stage is set! So today I went flying, and as the .61 only had a new gyro and a new set of painted frames I decided that would be the easiest to get set up and have some fun with. The engine started quickly and the needles were on. Click Idle up 3 D and snap the GV-1 on and Heaven here we come...a couple of flips and some piros and in to a hover... coming into a hover the heli let out a screeching sound and the engine reved way up. I got it on the ground and spent the next few minutes trying to find out what was wrong. Ron (my flyin' bud) said the belt was way loose...it might be broken. Got it shut down and started looking for the problem. No problem was found...unless you count the 3 missing engine mount bolts ( the last one was holding on by a few threads...yep, somehow I'd managed to forget to Loctite and tighten the motor bolts after the last gear ratio change! Stupid doesn't even come CLOSE to tellin' ya' how I felt...Oh well...it happens to the Best of us ...and I ain't close to the best of us!

Don't worry, the Futura I got from you has the .80...the boob machine was the .61...I'll tell ya what; I built the YS61 with the Shadel AAC piston and sleeve in Ron's heli and to tell you the truth I don't think I would go thru the trouble of the mega-enginges again..that damn thing will pull +/- 10 all day long and is WAY better on gas...Cheers...Chris

BTW; remember, Daylight Savings Time starts April 6 2002 14days and counting...

Maxx, has it been decided if the SE will stay in production? I have a friend the is very interested, he said he will buy an extra kit for just for parts if they aren't going to produce them.

I had a friend do the same exact thing w/ his
SE or Nova (forget which).

Get some Nordlock 2 piece lockwashers
and forget about the Loctite nonsense forever.
Believe me, you'll never go back.

PS. the SE is OUT of production. HUI has some
of the very last kits. If you want one, get 'em now.

Allen, the SE IS out of production! If you want one now is the best time! You won't have to worry about parts for the SE, 90% of the parts on the Nova are the same as the SE and the other 10% of the parts will be available from Robbe for a long time...they still make parts for the Champion (production ceased in the late '80's). The only SE specific parts that come to mind are the front tray structure, engine mount, side frames (with aftermarkets available) and a couple of frame spacers, everything else will swap between the Nova Milli and SE. Dyehard , the SE is going out of production and parts will be availble for a min. of 10 years, robbe still supplies part for scotts and champions. don't forget that SE's are easly upgradeable to be a nova and the nova and milli share 75% of there parts with the SE
right now the SE's are a steel at $700 , get one while they last.

I have 2 SE's and a nova , Belt drive RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Phil,
The Shadel piston and sleeves are still not available, last I heard from Ron Lund 2/7/02. He has been trying to get them for some time.
I got one of the last ones he had and put it in one of my YS61's that had the ring seize on the piston during break-in (don't have a clue why that happened).
Its got some power, you can tell how much higher the compression is during startup. I sure would buy another if/when they are available.

Are you guys flyin' much the last few weeks??

More Locktite Woes

Seems like yesterday was the day for locktite woes. I pulled my X-Cell up into the first half of a Cuban 8, came over the top of the first 270, established a 45 degree inverted downline went to roll out and nothing happened. My radio locked out. I got control back and saved it a few feet above the ground. The post mortem showed a loose muffler. I forgot to locktite the attachment bolt. That was a long 2 seconds and no I wasn't flying Ron's gasser or Maxx's gorgeous canopy.

Maxx, Mckoi, thanks for the update, the last I heard Robbe either was going to cease production of the SE or raise the price up to the level of the Nova and Mille. The information isn't for me, I'm quite happy with my X-cell SE's, but a friend has two Futura SE that he would like to keep going for as long a possible. He doesn't want a Nova and doesn't want to update to a Nova, he is well off enough to buy three kits just for parts if he wants, and he could have had a Nova when they first came out. He thinks they are too complicates, sort of like X-cells, I guess.

Today I talked to Dave Shadel at Performance Specialties. From his mouth to my ear: they have not made the Piston/Sleeves for the YS .61 in the past year and have no intention of doing so...I'm sure it has something to do with selling REAL YS parts instead of aftermarket items (Mr. Shadel did not say this...my conjecture ) they still make the wonderful AAC Piston and Sleeve combos that breath so much more life into the O.S. 61 SXWC but alas; the YS P/S is no longer available...perhaps someone else can make the same thing...perhaps overseas??? As I stated in my previous post, the Shadel P/S combo in the STII makes almost as much power as the .80 without the fuss of re-gearing (this is based on my obervation of both heli's in 3D flight...I've not put either engine on a torque bench!)...Sorry Phillip. As for the loss of the SE; my feelings are known, The Nova and Milli II are great birds but more parts to replace in the event of a mishap vs. the exact same flight preformance is a silly concept. I have talked to a few SE flyers that have stated plainly that if they wanted a Nova they would buy a Nova...they don't consider the Nova an "upgrade" and WILL go to another brand berfore switching the SE to a Nova! I'm not "in the know" as far as Robbe goes; but I really hope they can pull a Rabbit out of the Hat...(soon) the .50 market is really taking off (pun intended) and the Conquest is scrapped...and the lower cost .60/.80 helis are hot..., the SE is (was) at a great price and it's scrapped...I hope Robbe is planning something really cool to make me eat my words (soon), and should they; I will!
