Are there good sources online or through mail order to purchase a dial indicator? I see Sears has one for $50. Is that the going rate? Thanks.

DIAL INDICATOR

I would recommend that you buy a quality brand name such as Starrett and it will provide excellent service.

This is usually a tool that you will keep for a lifetime so it is important to research the various features available prior to purchase.

While I agree in that the $10 ultracheap model
is worth what you pay, I don't really see the need
to spend the $100+ for a Starrett.

I got a very nice one for about $60.

I have some indicators that cost as much as a new heli but that's what I do. I would not buy Enco stuff for my business but for working on model helicopters I say buy it. I would even buy the Sears stuff it's inexpensive and it will work just fine. If you do buy the Starrett stuff it will probably rust away in your toolbox before it will ever wears out. Happy indicating.

I agree about some Enco products aren’t Starrett but the company ships fast and the quality is fine for R/C use. If I want a last word reading I'll use a Starrett. I ordered matched V-Blocks some 1-2-3 blocks and a Magnetic Indicator base with fine adj. from Enco along with a dial indicator. I’m using a Compound Slide Milling and Drilling Table for a base to check on. Got all in 4 days reasonably priced and all works fine. You can get a decent digital caliper for around 70 to 80 bucks. My dial indicator was like 24.99 and it is fine for checking fan hub run out or to see if a main shaft or a feathering shaft is bent. I saw no sense in buying a high priced Caliper or indicator for R/C use. I make my living as an Operating Engineer not a machinist.

I bought something from Enco and while it was as fast as any other place, the shipping charges were much higher.

I saw no reason to use them again vs. any of the other online tool suppliers.

They do have a nice 6" dial caliper for about $25
or so although I've gone Digimatic lately.

I must admit that there is a few Enco products kicking around my shop. I can't afford to buy cheep-measuring equipment. Like I said I think there is no reason to buy highest quality instruments for home use and Enco products for home use are just fine. Also I don't think you are going to beat the service especially since they are a pretty established company.
