I've seen a few pictures of some crazy eskimos or something that were out flying in the winter... you see this guy all bundled up with his hands stuffed in what looks like a giant hand warmer with an antenna sticking up out of it, and a heli hovering inverted in front of him, a few feet off the snow.

I suppose you could try that, but that's crazy. Refueling's gotta be a pain too... spill a bit 'o nitro on the fingers and oh man that's gotta be cold!

Just Absolutely Beautiful

I wish that it could be that way for you year round.

It takes about a zillion cans of aerosol snow to get a scene like that down here for Christmas.

Year Round????

Thanks alivnrc---I think It's nice to have this for Christmas, but, beyond that it's useless to me. Of coarse I might feel differently if I owned a 120 mph sled!!! hehehehe

Winter is still here

We had floods here in WV this week and this morning we had snow and ice. Tomorrow it's going to be in the 50's but we will probably have big winds. Same thing on Sunday. The Robins came back a couple of weeks ago, but I think I saw one packing his bags this afternoon and checking his compus.

weather

I had plans on flying my nexus the last couple of days, I was home on spring break. But instead winter hit nothern New Hampshire and we got over 6 inches of snow and the wind was just a blowing. O well I got to work on my 1951 willys cj3a, and now it can go through the snow drifts, which is almost as fun as flying my heli.

Trees...

You were not kidding about all those trees you were telling me about BladeRunner. Not much room to hover around there for sure. Unless your into combat pilon racing. HEHEHE

Trees?

Hey Beezer, there is a lot more room than it looks. I learned to hover in the back yard-less room there!
I had a fun experience one time hovering about 1 ft. off the ground near the pond in the pic. As I went over the pond I lost ground effect!

The heli dropped into the pond like a rock--somehow I hit the throttle and it popped right out again!! hehehe--had my shorts in a knot that day. It felt kinda like going over a cliff!!

BTW, lucky the pond was empty at the time.

Hello,

Was wondering, if you crash a r/c heli in powder snow, is the damage less?

Powder?

I haven't had that happen, but it might? However, try finding scattered parts in 2 ft. of snow!!

Fly anyways!

Flew today and yesterday in this crap. It is in the 20's with high wind. It isn't easy, but makes me better I guess. Live 2 miles south of Lake Ontario. It's alway windy here. I wont know what to do when it isn't windy!

Alive and Tocking!

Ground effect?

I always thought ground effect was a negative influence? That is that because you're close to the ground and the air is not dissipating as easily, you get less air through the blades and thus it requires more throttle to hover in ground effect?

I'm a complete newbie, so I might have it backward, but if I do, please explain?

Hey Bladerunner; those pics bring back lots of memories, digging the cars out , tire chains , etc.!!! However, put a good 10,000 foot mountain in the mix and it ain't so bad...BTW flew the Futuras today, 65 and just enough of a breeze to make the autos hang forever! Don't worry dude, the Winter can't last forever! If it'll help ya' feel better, I'll do some inverted nose in and utter your name tomorrow ! Let me know... Chris (formerly of Vancouver B.C. and Cherry Creek, CO)

BTW: Ground effect is a condition where your wing (in our case the main rotor) creates a "cushion" of air close to the ground. I flew a Rand KR-2 homebuilt that decended like a 3-hole brick at 70 MPH...about flare time (8 feet) the thing became a hot air balloon due to ground effect, you could nurse it to 50 or so without a stall buffet...I always teach new heli flyers to hover within 8-12 inches of the ground, if the botton pitch is limited to 0-+1 degree at that height even with a full bottom collective move the heli won't fall to earth as quickly as it would 3-4 feet up with the same pitch settings.
