Main Discussion > Futaba 9001 Servo

I am thinking of getting one of the new Futaba nine channel heli radios (9CHP) and was wondering if the 9001 servos that come with it are proving to be OK for chopper use in 30 - 50 class machines.

Mostly wondering about reliability as compared to other servos and not so much the torque or centering unless they are below standard.

Also, what size batt pac for chopper comes with the heli PCM version. Could not find this info on several sites I checked.

G'day Alvin. How's the shoulder? All black & blue? Hey, did you make that story up as you're embarrassed cos it was your wife slapped you around? J/k.

You're one lucky dude, it could've been fatal.

The S9001s are fine for 30 size. 50 may be pushing them. The ones on my Shuttle are 4 years old & still going strong. Definitely more reliable than the S3001s.

The 9Z comes with a 1500mAh 4 cell A size pack which should be the same with the 9C.

The 9chp comes with a dismal pair of battery packs. 1000mAh for the receiver, and 600mAh for the transmitter. I have since replaced both so I can fly all day without having to worry about battery charge. www.superbatterypacks.com has a nice selection. I got the 4500mAh receiver pack and the 1830mAh transmitter pack. OK, maybe it's overkill, but what's wrong with that?

And of course what got me last week? A dead glow starter. GRRR

9001's

I have 9201's in my X-Cell 60 and am thinking on buying a 9C. Would the 9001's be better to put in than the 9201's I'm using?

The batteries come with a label on them saying to slow charge them the first charge, "until warm", which I did. It took a good day and a half for them to warm up too, the stock Futaba charger really has to work on them to pack in a full charge to such as large capacity battery.

After that I've been using a peak-detecting quickcharger at its slowest quickcharge rate, about 400mAh. After a long day of flying it usually takes about 12 hrs at that rate to hit peak and drop into trickle charge. NiMH cells don't like being overcharged. I'd recommend using a peak-detecting charger on any NiMH you have, for maximum battery life.

Unfortunately, my peak-detecting charger can't charge 8 cell packs, so I just have to plug the transmitter's pack into the stock Futaba charger. I leave it plugged in as long as the other pack is charging, and unplug them at the same time. Same goes for the glow starter.

The 9001's appear to be working quite well, although I'm not stressing them at all with my flying. The one on the pitch takes a while to move from one extreme to the other though, due to the long distance it has to pull the linkage. (Raptor) Someone flying 3D would probably want a faster servo there.

The 9001's are too wimpy for hard 3D, they are fine for general purpose flying.
