e-Electric Batteries & Chargers > Using Triton on AC power

Does anyone know of a cheap way to use a Triton charger through a home's power outlet? It really is a pain in the ass to try to cycle 4 3300
Mah packs through a 12v 7ah lead acid battery! Any ideas?

You can convert a PC's power supply or buy a commercial power supply, there are several threads on this. Such as:

http://runryder.com/helicopter/t61237p1/

http://www.runryder.com/helicopter/t54466p1/

http://www.runryder.com/helicopter/t54358p1/

Alternately look in the phone book for a friendly surplus electronics shop and get a power supply cheaply that is pretty much plug and play.

Or, better yet, get a real power supply:

Linear:

http://www.astroncorp.com/linear.shtml

or, if size and weight is an issue get a switcher:

http://www.astroncorp.com/sps.shtml

I have an SS-30M and a RS-20A. Both work great!

Get a Pyramid power supply from,

http://bsless.com

I got the PYRAMID PS14KX, and use it with my Triton charger, works great. I'm surprised no one else has said anything about it yet. I found out about it here.
I was going to convert a PC power supply, but it seems like a pain.

If my wife finds out how much these things cost, she's gonna kill me!!!

I also just encountered this problem.

I removed the PSU from an old PC I had in the garage & used that.

I just wired a 12v Halogen bulb across the +5v supply (any pair of black & red wires coming from the PSU) to give the PSU something to drive - with no load on the +5v it won't even start-up (that's a design feature). The 12v bulb glows dimly at 5v & so doesn't get too hot.

I use the +12v (any blue wire - which according to the PSU label has 8A capacity and paired black wire which is ground or -ve) to drive my Supernova 250S. Works just fine.

The rest of the wires are just taped-up.

YMMV

If you use a computer PSU just make sure to use a voltmeter to test the lines, not all wiring schemes are created equal and your colors may vary.

If I try to convert a PC power supply, is there any special kind I should be looking for or will a standard AT or ATX supply work OK? What do you guys do with all the tons of wires coming out of those things if you only really need to use the 12 volt wires?

I think all PC supplies have +5, +12 & -12.

I just leave all the wires loose! They all have a connector on the end so there's no danger.

I took a photo of mine in use just now but I can't seem to upload it to the forum.

Just make sure that halogen bulb doesn't become a fire hazard! Those things get hot.

I have a nice 350W PCAT power supply by PC Power & Cooling lying around and started to convert it, but got the Astron instead. With the Astron switcher the fan is temperature activitated and I'v only heard it come on once. The Astron RS-20 doesn't even have a fan. My PC Power & Cooling supply fan runs all the time...something I didn't feel like listening to....

$40 plus shipping and it's yours. It's a PC Power & Cooling Turbo Cool. I started to convert it so all the motherboard & drive connectors have been trimmed. All you need to do is put a load on the 5V side and add some connectors to the 12V leads. It will power on w/o the load on the 5v side. I blew it out with a can of compressed air so it looks brand new. I don't have it in front of me right now, but I believe it's rated at 45A on the 5v line and 15A on the 12v line.

"Just make sure that halogen bulb doesn't become a fire hazard!"

I can reassure you!

It's a 12v bulb stabilising the 5v supply. It glows dimly &, after 2 hours of constant use, it gets barely warm (& it's cable-tied in front of the PSU fan).

Regards, Kevin
