Main Discussion > suggestions for starter adapters...

Okay... I'm finally getting closer to taking the big leap and getting myself a heli.... but now I've got some questions about the other equipment needed... like starter shafts/adapters.

The heli I'm looking into does not have a one-way bearing in it on the starter coupler.... thus I need a starter adapter with a one-way bearing. I've been looking around and holy cow! I've seen some that are pretty pricey (~$60) and some half that if not less than. So my question is... how are the cheaper ones compared to the more expensive ones? Is there really any difference but the color purple?

Also... when I ever get a 2nd heli and by chance that heli may have the one-way bearing in it already... can I still use the starter adapter with a one-way or will I have to buy one without the bearing?

Thanks for the help

You can use a one way bearing on any of the hex start helis that start in the same direction. I don't know of any oddballs that spin the opposite direction. I have the cheaper one way from www.helihut.com, and it seems to be holding up allright. There is some play in it, which results n a slight wobble if the shaft isn't centered in the socket and the cone, but if you press down while starting, and keep everything lined up, it works just fine.

Thanks, John Cadwell

Go cheap

I have an expensive one (old Kalt unit) and the cheapo blue one sold by helihut and by Ricks. The cheap one is actually better, since it fits into the rubber cup a lot better, helping keep it aligned. I have had bad experiences with the purple KSJ unit that connects directly to the shaft.

IMHO, the cheapo blue one is the best, and for ~$26 the price is right

thanks for the input you guys. As long as there's nothing terribly wrong with the helihut one... then I'll go for that.

Thanks again!

Why don't you consider the Pagae system. You buy the wand that attaches to the starter and whatever adapter that goes on the heli. Check with Rick's for the correct adapter according to heli and shaft size. One-way bearing included in the system. I use it on all 3 helis I own. My starter below.
