This topic has been talked about greatly the last few days over on the Google newsgroups. A little 3 year old was hit with a plane flown by his dad. Looks like he'll be ok, though.

Scary stuff for sure. I remember my dad flying a Quickee 500 that got out of control during an airshow. It came into the pits and the wing tip hit another pilot carrying his transmitter. The guy's finger was broken; luckily no other injuries.

Super safety

This may sound stupid but it would be nice if pilots had a sort of driver stand that was comepletely plastic with some metal reinforcers. You could add heaters for winter, air conditioner for summer Ok i'm getting way ahead of myself but i still like dreaming.

I think we may have a market for that!

We could make it out of that orange stuff they use to make "Black Boxes" for commercial aircraft. I like the heat and A/C idea too!

If all else fails, we could just wear condoms when we fly.......there's gotta be some protection there

RC Heli Accidents

To prevent serious accidents in the flying fields I propose that only One pilot at a time should be flying. Everybody else stand back and watch the first on line and the next and the next to fly.
You just can not mix different levels of flying in one field - beginners, moderate, professionals and 3-D flying all in one field flying at the same time. You can scream "Watch out!" but who is the warning for and is there really time to react?
I know how eager we are to rid our nerve to fly our helicopters but should it not be "SAFETY FIRST" that should matter. So, the next time you fly, take a number before you fly.
When I go to the flying field where Airplane rules, they all step aside when it is my turn to fly. We as helicopter flyers should give way to only one pilot on the field as if we are in competition.

I am a beginner and I am still practicing my hovering in my backyard. My backyard is not that big, I hover at 2-4ft and in the middle of the lawn and the tip of the tail rudder is only 7-12ft away from me and when the heli come too close to me I would just move my head back and move the heli slowly away from me. It is very scary hearing these incidents I will try harder to keep it in the middle of the lawn. I hope the oil does not kill the grass.. I will try put more distance between me and the heli by standing in the driveway. now it will be on my mind what could happen if something go wrong.

current popular accidents waiting to happen

when i started flying about 5yrs ago one of the most popular mishaps was heli engines going full throttle on startup, this is easily avoided by systematically preflighting the bird in numerical order / no no i mead actually preflighting in numerical order not just fliping on and wiggling the swash and tail! My students are taught from the begining not to trust any heli and to aclement themselves with the channels by numerically checking each channel during preflight and always start on throttle hold!!! Failure to preflight/failure to start on throttle hold and failure to properly bond blade root stiffners to bare wood on woodies/failure to "D" tail pushrods before locktighting the link/failure to use security clips on the connections between battery and switch and gyro and servo/failure to insure switch continuity runs across the length of the switch in on position for vibration resistance and not across the end!/failure to get help and blade balance and ama and good advice are the most common and dangerous things i encounter every month. But i fault the pilots with experience to most, yeah like myself, who see a new guy flying without properly bonded blades and his buddy and dont offer to help. They think because their buddy got away with it and a couple of other pilots said its ok that it really is ok, it is extremely dangerous to attempt flight with incorrectly bonded and balanced blades!!!!! If 1 delaminates and slings into your face u will never see it coming! MAN WHAT A WAY TO GO OUT! I say we help the newbies by example and dont help them develop bad habits etc.

Thoughts on Disasters

There are a lot of scary accidents out there to talk about. I personally watched Giant Scale racers just miss pilots and spectators at my own field. I have watched Quickies snap a wing in the corner and turn into a missle. I ain't seen it all but I've seen a bunch. What strikes me as amazing is that most of this stuff I have witnessed has been witnessed by my fellow heli pilots and they have complainted about safety. We share a field with airplane guys and I fly both. I listen to their concerns, then turn around and watch aerobatic heli takeoffs from the pits, standing right next to the runway and hovering a glitching heli back to the pits. This said, these heli guys are good. (most of them) I also read some statements a month ago about some of the best in the business and there safety in flying. I "heard" and I was not there that these guys were flying in and out of power lines. Dangerous?? I think as a group we heli guys are more ballsy, dangerous, lax, whatever term you want to use than the airplane guys. Airplanes have probaly injured, killed more than helis but there is a heck of a lot more of them and they have been around for a lot longer. It is real cool what these helis can do, but as a group, no matter how good or bad we are as pilots, we need to think about a chunk of carbon fiber spinning at 1800 rpm. Planes glitch and crash. Helis glitch a lot more. Just ramblings and maybe some thought provokers
