Does an air filter like the ones I see on nitro powered r/c cars need to be installed on the carb of a helicopter engine?

Most people I know don't run filters, but probably should. I have been looking at this one ricks has for sale.

I use that very filter on all three of my helicopters. I've noticed no loss of power with these on and I like the extra protection they provide.

tittleba, i want to put one on the OS32 in my R30. Do you have the brand name; maybe i can get one locally; i don't have an order big enough for ronlund right now. Anything i need to know? I guess there is plenty of room for it? Do you drop the engine regularly to clean the filter? I've been wondering how big a factor inhaled dirt is for engine life. TIA.

I think they're made by century but I could be wrong. I installed them without a problem and I've had zero problem with them. The one on my OS .32 has been on the longest (~3months) and I havn't had to clean it yet. I think most of the debris is blown off by the fan when the chopper is in clean air.

On my planks, I do what a friend of mine started to do.. Take a nylon (don't let the Mrs catch ya ) and cut a piece of it, about a 3/4" square.. Put it over the carb opening, and put a rubber band from a kid's braces around it.. Works like a charm, cheap, and could many many engines with one nylon

Kinda have to wonder what happens though if that rubber band fails...

Nylons in a carburator can't be a good thing...

I can't see using a filter, except for beginning hover over a dusty area. For the most part the carb is pulling air that has been through the cooling fan. the dirt gets thrown to the shroud and gets "glued" down by the oil film. This is called inertial separation. Even the best filter is going to disturb the inlet air

Does "inertial separation" take into account that there's a big tube in the middle of the airflow that's sucking things in? True, it's harder for objects to reverse or change direction to go into the carb, but you have to remember that the carb isn't just a static tube sitting there, it's pulling. Beyond that I have no idea, I don't know how much pull the air inlet has, I've never tried to put my thumb over it.

Wouldn't that just ruin a mosquito's day?

hmmm.. never thought of that... good point.. maybe rubber o-rings.. or the heck with it.. fork over the $3 and get a good bru-line unit

good point.. wow.. can't believe I never thought of that either!!! I'd hate like heck to lose my 1/3rd scale cap!!

Inertial separation would help remove a lot of the potential debris that could enter the carb but the debris I just cleaned off my three filters (this post made me decide to clean them) is evidence that inertial separation is not 100% effective....and as Virtual1 noted, the carb. is creating negative pressure at the intake.

I don't fly in a dirty/dusty environment and spend very little time near the ground. I’d also add that I recently had my t/r belt fail on me in flight. I was able to save my Raptor from crashing but the broken frayed belt had created a tremendous amount of fine white powder that my carb filter stopped from entering the engine.

I’ve read about a loss of power using certain types/brands of filters but the one’s we’re discussing here (made my century?), the one’s I use, have created no loss in power that I can discern.

Tom

Has anybody used Tobee Craft carb air filters? The link above has some photos of the CNC machined filter.

Air Filter............

I have one on my Sceadu 30. (O.S 32) The Filter is put out by CENTURY Heli Products.
Part number *CN2214B* Cost was $6.95
Alot of people dont use them, but I rather be safe then sorry. Its just a screen to keep the bigger items out of the carb. ......

Stever is right; we should, but most of us (including me) don't.

I've got one of those filters from Ron; had it over a year, but have been just too lazy to install it.

tittleba's revelation about the debris from his tail rotor belt was like a slap in the face; there IS more to worry about than dust from ground effect hover.

Good thread...

Ummm ... guys, I was referring specifically to the air filter by Tobee Craft. Just wondering if anybody has used it before and what was their experience. Have linked to one of the photos at Cyberheli. They sell is for $19.99. It's definately not the century one. The link in my previous post (two or three posts up) has more photos.

I use the Tobee Craft Filter on my Sceadu 30 (after having my cylinder destroyed by FOD), and it sure is well crafted.

It's rather big, but there's plenty of room for it in the Sceadu. No sign of power-loss after installing it..
