Thanks to some encouragement from my last major topic on the Ultimate Guide (http://runryder.com/showtopic.htm?s=&topicid=5345), I've decided to create the 10 commandments which I think is the best advice I recommend to anyone beginning and intending to stay in this hobby for many years to come.

As always... I will start it, please contribute or refute. Let's hope we make it meaningful for all of us.

The 10 Commandments for R/C Helicopters.

1. Helis come and go, it's the avionics that contribute most to performance.

2. Upgrades most of the time will not compensate for lack of skill

3. A bone stock heli "should" be able to win contests.

4. Never buy crash parts on credit. Pay it off ASAP.

5. Don't envy better pilots, learn from them. They like to watch good flying too from the sidelines.

6. You'd be amazed what a new glowplug can do for a heli.

7. Reliability is better than Higher Performance.

8. Autorotation is a skill best not put off for later.

9. Share advice only on things you have direct experience with.

10. Talk only if your thumbs can prove it.

How about changing number 10 to:
" Don't let your mouth write checks your thumbs can't cash". :-)

Helicopters & Women

I like what Ray said in his book....

"...Helicopters are like women, they'll let you know when something is wrong...."

-Neil

Hey man, why does my lipo get bigger every time I charge it?

Hmmmm... Well Neil I'm not married so I don't have any personal experience with what Ray said in his book but from what I have gathered from other's experiences, maybe it should have read more like this "......Helicopters are like women, the won't tell you what is wrong directly but expect you to know what it is anyways. Either way you will be spending plenty of time in the workshop trying to figure it out....." [Flame suit on and ducking for cover]

J/K... HEHEHE

It's more like "Helicopters are like women. Just when you think everything is great. Bammm everything goes to crap all of a sudden." (just kidding)

Build it, fly it, crash it. Repeat as often as needed.

My experience...

I am married, and I will say from experience that my wife, every now and then, expects me to use my unlimited psychic powers to pick up on something I've done wrong.

However, more times that not, she just comes out and tells me!!! She is an incredibly virtuous woman and I don't deserve her.

My helicopter was nice enough to talk to me the other day:
I was flying my Quick .30 (please, no Quick bashing...) when I noticed the fore/aft cyclic was a little sluggish. I immediately landed and discovered the flybar was VERY stiff. It turns out one of the see-saw bearings had frozen up. Being a "Tim the Toolman Taylor" type of guy (ugh, sputter, grunt...), I've got 9204's on the swash. Upon further investigation, the massive servo torque caused the frame around the pitch servo to crack (on both frame sides)! My nice helicopter gently told me something was wrong and it needed a little attention.

To make a long story longer:
The local expert who checked out my Quick sold me his XL Pro I. Owning a helicopter that was used to compete at the nationals was a little intimidating, so I was determined not to light it up until I was off the training pods. However, being a typical impatient male, and not wanting to waste some good flying weather waiting for Quick parts, I strapped the pods on the XL and started to check it out. It took me a tank to get everything adjusted. WOW!!!! It's so incredibly stable and well-behaved. I've been able to hover (I'm a GREEN newbie) in very gusty conditions. I don't want to go back to a .30 machine EVER!!!!

I bought an XL .46 today....

You guys are a lot of fun! Thanks!

"Waiting for Quick parts."

Is that not an oxymoron?

Just kidding, not bashing!

Build it, fly it, crash it. Repeat as often as needed.
