Hitec servos seem to have just as good as specs as the competition but at much lower prices. But a lot of people say their quality isn't as good for various reasons. Does anyone use them and have you had problems?

3 years ago, I bought 4 of Hitec servos to use in 1/10 rc cars (HS-525BB) 3 of them went bad within a month. Last month I bought 2 of their micro servos (HS-55) and they are buzzing like crazy out of the box. When I contacted Hitec, their response was "send them in to get them checked, they should not be "buzzing". Needless to say, that was my LAST Hitec purchase! Other people have had better luck with them.

I just purchase my third set of Hitec's.I have (3) 5925's and (6) 5945's,very impressed with their performance.I do believe their lower end servos could use some improvements.Jason Kalbfleisch

Hitec Servos

Hi there,
I had 4 HS605BB in my Xcell 30, less than six months old.
I have now scrapped 3 of them due to either stripped gears (2 off),or
excessive slop.
Also on the same heli i had a HS525BB on the tail, this servo failed on me due to a very noisy pot, resulting in a crashed heli!!!!.
Needless to say, i wouldn't buy any Hitec servos again.
I would not recommend them.

The hi speed 525s from Hitec make great fast throttle servos to match with digital and ultra fast analog servos of other brands and centering on throttle servos isnt importaint as say all other functions also there is no load to wear out the cheaper Hitec in this useage. The price is right too. I wont use Hitecs on any other heli control tho no way not in my helis, I do like the 525s tho for .15 throttle speed.

I have never used any Hitecs, but I was warned some time ago about using metal geared servos in a heli. The logic is; In a heli environment with the extra vibrations and quickly changing loads that are typical (compared to a fixed wing) metal gears ware a lot faster than other types.
It would seem from many posts here that there may be some truth to this. If you look at the construction of helis as far as gearing goes you don't usually see metal on metal, it's mostly metal/plastic (nylon). There must be a logical reason for this? I have no proof of this, but, I have seen NO ware on my Nexus gears from the main to the tail pinion--plastic/metal.
You be the judge. Anyone else know about this?

I have used the hitecs with some success. I have a Sceadu 50 that is mostly hitecs. 625s on cyclics, 645 on collective, 525 on throttle. I have a gy501 on the tail. They seem to work well, and I have not had any servo problems. They are more expensive than the lower end hitecs. The 605 has known vibration issues, and seems to be a bad choice. I also have a Hawk IV with a 645 on the collective.

Thanks, John Cadwell

BladeRunner,
metal to metal main to pinion gears can cause electrical frequency noise ( RX glitches). Also it costs quite a bit more to machine metal gears verses moulded, X-Cell has 2 versions the regular cheap moulded and the expensive machined nylon maingear used in their hi-end helis, right there shows the price diff between them simply because of the extra machining and yes, metal to metal wears out much faster on mains and in servos then nylon. The only place ive ever even seen all metal gears was in the tail sections of X-Cells and Bergens and yes they are noisy but dont seem to cause RX probs.

I've been using 525s on R50/R30 cyclics with no problems and 545s on collective. Gradually they're being replaced with 56 and 5925/45s - again no problems and a big improvement. Only stupid thing I did was using 525s on an R60 - far too high a load so I stripped the gears 2 seconds before it re-joined mother earth...oooops

As some people have found out

If you buy the cheapest lowest grade product that any manufacturer puts out, be ready to pay the price. If your willing to pay for their better stuff you will be rewarded.
I won't put anything smaller that a 625 on control surfaces and 525 on throttles or tail rotor and I use metal gears allmost exclusivly as there are no FULL metal gear servos. There is always one non-metal gear (in good servos) to keep RF interferance from happening.
