hey all,

I gave in and got thunderpower (2) 5s4p 8200 lithium packs..

Here are some photos of them mounted in the joker using the accucaps... It fit but the mounting would have been a little easier if the accucaps sat just a drop lower.... a little tough to get the locking pin through since they are sitting slightly high.

I am hoping to go fly the machine today......

When i charge it i can charge it as 2 packs or 1 10s4p pack using the schulze 636....

I need more time and this should be the ticket for at least now....

joker on lipo flight update.......

Update on flight.......

I was up for 6 minutes and then had motor/controller failure... I am not sure if it is the motor or controller yet... I had the same problem with another controller on nimh so i dont think it is the batteries

2517 mah was used in 6 minutes of flying so that would translate to about 19-20 minutes total time on a pack.

Power was exceptional much greater than the 32 cell nimh 3300 pack....i dont know if it was the weight savings or just more juice in the cells. After 6 minutes total voltage on the pack was 38.2 volts....

Lipos are the answer......

Now i have to test and see if the speed controller died or the motor....

24-4 motor with 23 tooth pinion........

Larry,

I am getting ready to try mine out tomorrow! I am having some trouble with the battery mounting though. I am using the TP LiPos as well and am concerned about the lock nuts cutting through the shrink wrap on the batteries. I have looked at the pics you posted and was going to mount mine the same way, but like I said, those nuts are driving me ......nuts. Have you done anything to with that? Also, how did you secure the caps to the batteries? Any problems with them sliding around? I can't wit to try this thing!

Tom,

I reversed the screws with the nuts to eliminate the issue.. The screw head is in the battery area and the nuts are on the outside...

I used tape to strap the packs together and then siliconed the accucaps on top. I trimmed the accucaps so that they will sit tight on top..... I only used the tops...

It is a tight fit but just fits i also put one locking post from each side of the frames. i find this helps it line up better..

what is your configuration

Let me know your results

Flight update

Hey all,

i took the joker out today...

(2) 11 minute flights on one charge and still had about 700 mah left on pack.

I was just hovering and climbing a little. I am getting used to a tray transmitter and still a little nervous due to the different feel..

rpms were around 1650 and power felt pretty good.

I probably will do (2) 10 minute flights in the future and leave a little reserve in the pack...

Speed control barely warm, motor about 125 and battery around 110

I did have some trouble with startup.. It took about 5 or 6 times to get it to go. I am now experiencing the startup issues some people complained about.. I will have to try some different settings on the governor and/or adjust the blade tightness.

I'm using the "Joe" setup. I am still a bit unsure how to set up the V3, but hope to get with Joe in the AM to get it sorted. Mostly, I am not sure how to "decouple" the throttle and pitch curves. Also, I don't know if I can program different head speeds with the idle up. Thanks for the info on the packs.

Just curious, but how are you charging them? I spoke with Charlie on Thursday and he told me I should charge each pack separately so I bought two 330 chargers instead of the 636 I wanted.

I was going to charge them together but i saw some packs go up up in flames last week.. I am going to play it safe and charge them seperate .. I have 2 636 chargers.

Keep an eye on them while charging if any cells puff up turn it off immediately...better to be safe then sorry..
