Miniature Aircraft Nitro/Gas Helicopters > Almost lost it !!!!

I almost lost my fury today. I took my baby to work to fly in a field where a high school use to be (by the time I get home on time to fly). So, for lunch took it out back, started it, and got into a tail-end hover @ approx. 15ft., and just held it there (to warm up). After a few seconds the heli started to turn nose-end toward me very slowly. Once it stopped I was looking directly at it nose-end (which I am still learning to do). I didnt get scared until after it wouldnt take any rudder commands at all. I pushed the to the left and right, but got nothing. All of a sudden the heli went inverted, then right side up, then it just started flip'n and turning out of control heading straight for a brick wall that was about 100 ft away. I stayed with the sticks, and finally about 3 to 5 ft before the wall I got it back. That scared the S#&T out of me so, that it took me what seemed liked FOREVER to land.

I said all this to say what happened to me to day???

Almost!

Well, you must be doing something right if you stayed on the sticks in a situation like that. Good for you! Lucky the damage was only to your shorts!!!!!!!

What happend to me today

When ever I go fly at a new site, I always bring my hand held scanner, and let it run while setting up the helli etc. This gives me an idea of the cleanliness of the airwaves. The scanner is a good tool and well worth the investment. Of course it does nothing for you while you in the air and some interferance comes alogn. But you'll lean to use it in a way that lets you know of other flyers at you local flying field on your channel and keeping track of them. But good save and sticking with it, if it was my dad, he would of just yelled at us saying "Watch this crash"

Scanner

Never though of using a scanner, and probably should have since I work for a police department, and where I was flying is right next to our fire department.
Thanks Alan:confused

wouldn't hurt to check for anything loose causing rf interference, range check b4 next flight, and keep on ground for sec started and watch for any servo twitch, could be caused by the heli, rcvr, or outside interference....nice save good luck..........

Yeah I am sure we all have some close calls. One time I was doing something and all of the sudden it was 200 feet in the air 500 feet away. Not sure about the calculations but it was a dot. I couldn't tell what it was doing. I was scared. I had a panic attack. I should have kept going foward and turned it toward me since I knew how to turn, but I in such a panic I fly it backwards toward me. I got it back but it was stress ful.
Another time I my collective arm was braking, so I replaced it. I forgot to put the screw back in for the arm. Flying with no arm for a day and I found out a week later when I wanted to change the collective servo. Good thing it didn't fall off in flight.

Some other person didn't charge his batteries. He crashed into a hill and I got a free canopy out of it.

I can go on with stories, but I will stop.

My point- Flying can really stressful when something is wrong. Sure you can rebuild your heli, but it still can bother you to see it in pieces.

frequency check

I run a scanner as well. Let us know which frequency you were on. We share the lower portion of 72 with construction remote control and beeper towers have interference from @ 39-41 and I have seen interference from 18-22. These are approximate. I had to get off of 40 due to major problems. My scanner has been very helpful. Good luck with finding the cause.

Almost...

Hi Heliboy3030,

You Should use a PCM receiver (of course if your radio is able to do it...)
FM receivers are subject to perturbations.

Try Radio Shack, they have some nice handheld scanners, just make sure and ask if they cover 72mhz.
