To prevent the risk of mechanical failures, I always have my mechanic inspect my heli before every flight.

How much do you pay it for the service?

He works pretty cheap. A scratch behind the ears is usually enough. It did take me a bit to discourage him from chewing on the fins though... ("Fuzzy! Stop trying to eat my helicopter!")

Failures?

Some things are gonna' give up and break no matter what you do. The best thing is to get into the habit of thorough pre-flights, if it dosen't look right then it probably isn't. It's amazing what you can catch just by poking around before your first flight of the day.

BTW, I just changed the metal gears in my 8411's to convert them to 8411SA's--see my post "Well I confirmed it".
I consider this preventative maintainence considering the reported problems with the 8411 metal gears.

Nothings better than a good preflight, except maybe a thorough look over for cracks and anything unusual at home.

Home???

I have a lot of cracks and unusual stuff at home, all I care about is that my heli is good to go when I get to the field! Priorities you know. ---Hehehehe.

The problem BladeRunner was not gears or even the pinion gear failing; I explained what Len said several times on this forum. The new gears should make the gear train more precise for a longer period. But if it makes you have a new outlook on the 8411 that's great. I'm glad that you was able to use the entire 8231 gear package.

When we chatted about it awhile back I said I only used one gear out of the 8231 set to replace the only nylon gear in my 8411 resulting from a crash. I knew Jim Stark said he has used the 8231 gears. I have never doubted my 8411’s; I believe totally what Len said about severe binding caused the problem with the stacks coming loose from the armature shaft.

I make sure I have no binding. I spin the blades sitting on the bench and work the collective and the cyclics to their limits and look for any binding. I know nothing lasts forever but my 8411's still seem like new.

Failures?

Well, I'm glad you have no problems with your 8411's. There must be a reason that Horizon is offering the "new" 8411 SA.
The only difference (that I can see) is that two of the metal gears are now nylon. I have a feeling that the metal gears will ware faster and somehow they were locking up, with all the power that is available in the 8411's something has to break and it turns out to be the pinions comming loose, I guess that is the weakest link. I'm no expert on any of this stuff, but that's what has been reported as the problem, so to me I"m just trying to stay ahead of it-if nothing else cheap ($3) piece of mind for me, warranted or not.

Rotating the cyclic is a surprisingly informative test. I did that when I built my Raptor, and I found that I could somewhat start the blades to rotating if I timed it just right. Now that I have freed up the links and gotten everything smooth, that's impossible to do.

A guy that had just built his heli had it at an expert's to look over. I happened to be there and noticed that he could actually get the mains spinning by rotating the cyclic. Turns out he had screwed in the bolts on the flybar block too far and had frozen his flybar.

Gears?

rickc, I just reread your post. Actually I only used two gears from the new set, just to replace the metal ones-the metal final output gear remains in place and it only took about five min. for each servo.

Clean is Devine

Clean you helicopter!!!

That's usually when I find things on the verge of going. If there's residue or fuel where there usually isn't; you've either got a leak (fuel or exhaust) or you've been flying backwards inverted. Wiggle the blades and flybar to see if any part of the control system has become worn or loose (do the tail too). Every two or three months I do a thorough inspection where I check every bolt and moving part for wear or looseness.

If the ship has crashed, I do a total tear down. I check everything, even stuff that wasn't supposedly damaged from the crash. I've seen so many hastily rebuilt helis after-crash (crash again) because of something that was missed from the first crash.

I have found that when you make the mechanics ride in the plane/helicopter they repair, the work shows a definite improvment. In that spirit you should take your A&P Cat along for the test flights after repair. I found a harness that could easily be modified to sling the Cat below the heli. The pics are here:
http://dbhs.wvusd.k12.ca.us/Humor/Cat-Carrier.html

As a side effect of using a cat - which we know always lands on it's feet - you could wire a stabilizing system onto the cat as a leveling autopilot.
