I'm going to have to defend the Quick line of Heli's. They are a great, all metal machine. Not like the plastic CRAPPY RAPPIES. You don't have to buy them from HHI either. Heliproz sells them. Also www.chucksrc.com Thats my opinion.

Lemons?

Check out my gallery. American R/C Mantis and MFA Sport 500, both considered lemons by most. Shortly after I got the Sport 500, I did a search and found it was considered the worst r/c heli still in production. Oh well, I made lemonade with my lemon. I did learn to hover with it and learned much about maintenance and repair.

The recommended way? No, just MY way.

Morely 300 & Vario Viper

Can you say Morely? I actually had a chance to fly one of their 300s. I couldn't believe how flightly and non stable it was. This was at the time when the Blue (woof & poof) Shuttles were the rage. They did look very scale though (for a pod and boom).

The Vario Viper deserves mention; though it is not by any means an Edsel. It is a high quality carbon and fancy anodized aluminum machine. It was however, designed by drunk germans. The swashplate is underneath the huge main gear. The top main bearing must be at least three inches in diameter. It has a double clutch (combination centrifugal and auto rotation clutch in one assembly). The cyclic servos are bunched under the swashplate and slide up and down on rails. And let's not forget about the two full size fuel tanks. Pretty radical design!!!

No offense is intended by the phrase "drunk germans". I offer my apologies if anyone is offended.

My sad heli story

In 1990 I tried my first heli, GMP Rebel, fixed pitch, 40 size airplane engine. Would
barely get off the ground with training gear.
Found a guy who new how to fly and he removed the training gear and tried to fly it.
He had lots of trouble just hovering and told me the heli was to heavy for the 40 engine
I was using. Had 4 crashes trying to hover so I gave up. Bought a Raptor 30 in 2001
and have had a blast with it!

My vote has got to go to the Revolution Hoverstar. It was my first heli. What a POS. I'm surprised I ever learned how to hover that thing.

And I think despite the furry, the Futura still is the one.

another lemon

I have another lemon to vote for. The Hobby Lobby ELECTRIC 500. Man it was awful. I had to load it up with about $1000 in electronics and the best I could get out of it was about a 10 second, uncontrolled hover that left my heart rate at about 210.

As I remember, it used airplane style steel clevises for the tail rotor blade "grips". Now >that's< quality engineering.

What a waste. The worst part is that I have to admit I bought one.

1. remember the old ball muffler -
looked funny but did the job

2. those thick black super heavy duty gmp competitor skids -
really liked the machine though , had all the high end mods from hirobo.

3. pesky starter motor belt drive -
found on the older high end hirobo and kalt machines - It would always get sucked into the cabin and get twisted.

4. flexible cable tail drive -
these drives worked well but needed a speed up unit to keep it up in sync

5. remote electric engine starters -
anyone ever used these before ?

6. rear engine start cone OS long stroke HS -
had one os 61 that had this feature and I like it alot but it sat lower to the ground as a result too.

7. Shinwa super pumper starter system -
expensive but good piece of equipment at a cost of almost $200 us

8. MSK paddles and white plastic blades -
looks good but soon after cracks would appear due to centrifical forces, the white blades would always end it's life by separating in flight. too many forced autos with them.

theres more for sure ...

MFA 500 full body

I had one.. not the sport 500 they sell today, but the original full bodied aluminum/fiberglass POS.. Never came close to getting it off the ground.. Called for a 40, I had a 50 in it, still no luck. It weighed a ton!! That fiberglass had to be almost 1/4" thick in some places, and paper thin in others.. and it was an UGLY powder blue gelcoat on the tailboom, and white gelcoat fuse that cracked if you looked at it wrong. Had contact paper to cover the rotors. I finally off-loaded it at an auction for $125 ( I wouldn't have paid $10) so I was happy. What a bad way to think about going from planks to heli's. That was 10-15 years ago.. Just now retried heli's with a nexus and a couple rappy's.. love it!! I still wonder if anyone ever really flew that full bodied 500 from MFA???

Eric,

Interesting that you mentioned the Lion's Helicat. I thought they only reached Canadian shores. The poor Australian distributor went toes-up after investing in a promotional video.

Now Century is marketing it as the Hawk :=)

Lion Heli-Cat

When I brought this issue up with Century years ago, I was informed that the the only thing used on the Hawk from the molds purchased from the Lion receiver sale was for the Canopy. It was that of the canopy used on the first version of the Hawk. Last year I picked up a new in the box Lion Helicat at a swapmeet, and there is about as much resemblance between the Hawk IV and the Helicat as there is between a Nexus, Kalt Enforcer, Baron 30, or Shuttle and a Helicat.

helicat

Oldfart- you said Hawk IV? How about the similarities between the original Hawk / or Hawk III (?) and the Helicat? I seem to remember them being nearly the same. Am I mistaken?

TT36

Believe or not I learned to fly on an Xcell 60 custom. Nice machine. Got a Raptor 30 ARF for that Xmas to thras and burn. I have flown that bird a bunch, but I got my moniker thanks to the TT36. Some were pretty reliable. Mine would die whenever it felt like it. I only got to 50/50 on the autos with it.

Eric

Eric,

There were a few less desirable similarities with the original Hawk (canopy, swashplate), but the Hawk II did away with the canopy and by the Hawk III even the swashplate was changed. The only similarity by the time the Hawk III was introduced was the layout of the components. Their again you could say the same about the Shuttle and others in this area.
