Miniature Aircraft Nitro/Gas Helicopters > Fury and tuned pipes

I'm an OS 61 wc in a Fury expert.

Currently I'm running a Zimmerman muffler.

I'm looking for more power, so that my rpms don't decay as much during consecutive flips, etc.

Trying to decide between a CY muscle pipe and the Weston.

What do you guys think and what experiences good/bad have you had with each?

Thanks

I had zero luck with the Weston. Mixture range all over the place. It was so loud that I didn't bother trying to dial it in. Just my opinion. It is a nice piece though. I would suggest the muscle pipe, or the miniature nitro pipe.

Dear Friend, in my opnion muscle pipe is better then weston.
But you will need to run with 30% CP to the best reaction for the engine, sometimes i open the exaust window at the cylinder line and put out the ring between the cylinder and head.

How do you have for glow plugs?

I agree that the muscle pipe is the way to go but unless you like buying glow plugs you need to stay away from 30%. I have a great deal of time running tuned pipes, V-tech's mostly, and I can tell you that 30% plus a tuned pipe equals tosted glow plugs. Also, there is more than just slapping a pipe on your machine and going flying. They are called tuned pipes for a reason, you have to tune them. Also, don't operate under the illuision that they will govern your engine. That is BS! They will act like a governer to a very small degree, but only if your setup is damn close. My suggestion to you is if you don't have any experience with a tuned pipe and there is nobody local to assist you I would stay away, unless you are a really patient person. Remember, pipe length is RPM dependant. Higher RPMs = shorter pipe and vice versa.

In the end I think a better soultion to your problem would be an inprovement on your collective timing. Blowing through a manuver does not get you anywhere anyway.

Good Luck!

Raptor_killer,
Using the OS 61 with a Zimmerman muffler you can get more power by going up to 30% NItro fuel with the higher oil content. If you are already there there is one very important thing to do to get the power, use cyclic to throttle mixing.

If you add around 15% throttle mix to both the aileron and elevator you will see a great improvement on consecutive manuevers. This will be from center stick out to max throw in each direction. When setting this make sure that the mix ADDS the throttle for each of left/ right and forward/ aft and does not REMOVE the throttle! The mix usually looks like a V curve.
As I see it, what is really happening is that when the mixing is set properly, the throttle ALWAYS stays ahead of pitch changes (cyclic as well as collective (these two add to each other)), and this keeps the rotor speed from decaying. The mixing adds throttle just ahead of the pitch change. Experiment with this to get what feels good and you will be amazed at "how much more power" your helicopter seems to have, especially in consecutive manuevers. If you get too much mixing too soon, the rpm's will actually rev up as you roll and such, and it sounds really cool! (but of course, that is too much)

A warning ! Make sure that at full power and full collective and cyclic (everything in the corners), you do not bind or pop links off of the throttle!! A servo saver can be used or if you have 7 point or assignable point position mixing you can set the mix where it is removed just before maximum throttle (because you are already at max anyway) to keep from having a bind.

I hope that this makes sense, as it works great!!

Thanks for the suggestions and advice.

I'm currently running 30 percent cool power.

700 V-blades.

I do have throttle to cyclic mixes. Thank you very much for the advice on checking to make certain I'm not overdriving the throttle servo and to adjust for it using the 5 point mix curves.

Plus you are correct that I run into the RPM decaying issue when I blow the inputs and end up maxing out my cyclics and throttle to recover. Figures the RPM's decay just as you need them the most.

I'm not running a governor, as I've had so many isues related to the governor, directly and indirectly that I gave up on it.

The V-curves are very close, I was hoping that a tuned pipe might give me that little bit of extra power and some governing attributes.

I was also under the impression that the MP or Weston had pretuned length's so some of the issues with tuning tuned pipes were eliminated.

Thanks again

Fury and tuned pipes

Also try running light 680's as they are shorter and light for better response and less decay..... or even go get a OS91 or YS80.

The Gamma700's (Miniature 700's) that are in the low 170's (gram weight) do increase your roll performance a bunch especially with consecutive manuevers. These blades will also auto like the heavier blades.

Thanks everyone.

Sounds like I need to refine what I have for now.

Plus start saving my pennies for a bigger engine setup.
