| I have, and many others like me, traded on good will and the belief that whoever else is as interested in the hobby as I am would not be out to con or steal (or whatever else you wish to call it).
We all take each other's honest word, either in the descriptions of the items for sale or in the personal info or addresses.
It is an honourable thing to do and I'm glad to be able to be part of that. There's nothing nicer than being able to post a good reply to a good guy list or similar and nothing better than being treated as you would treat others.
This guy needs to be discovered and this issue sorted out. This type of behaviour ruins the trust etc that has been built up between people within a group (eg our hobby). It also makes me very angry that some low life thinks he can take advantage of such trust.
Though slim, I would hope that there would be a sensible reason for him not getting in touch (eg had to leave for a while with work commitments or member of family ill or similar-you think up of more reasons).
Keep record of all communications with him. Send a formal letter requesting the items back(get him to sign for the letter and check who did actually sign). Get the law involved, it might be an easy crime for them to solve, improves their stats, though don't hold your breath on this point too much!
Best of luck in getting your things back.
IRAW50, I sympathise greatly with you.
Here's my story:
I had something similar happen to me a few years ago. I had crashed off my motorcycle and needed a few parts to get it going again, which included front forks and wheel, fairing panels etc. We knew of a guy, Robbie Bulger, with whom we'd allready traded before and thus contacted him. I was promised almost all the neccesary part for £800, he'd even deliver them as he would be passing before the end of the week. A cheque was sent, it was duly cashed and no more was heard of/from him, he had dissapeared. We tried taking him to the small claims court and bailiffs(sp?), but we were told by a supposed brother that the name was incorrect etc, anyway it would cost even more to go through the process again so we gave up.
In the end this meannt that this $hit had stolen £800 from us and walked away scott free. He had abused the trust that exists between motorcyclists, a rather closed knitt community and got away with it!!
By us I mean me and my parents, btw. It affected my father quite a bit, he couldn't believe anyone could be so dishonest. It affected him personally and greatly affected his sleep. Not too long after that he had to have a heart op. I'm not saying this caused his heart condition but it sure as hell didn't help.
I still sometimes buy second hand, but more using online services such as PayPal etc which give you some protection due to the credit card involvement (I hope this belief is true!!).
End of rant and sorry for such a lengthy post. This topic stirred up a bit of anger!
All the best,
Gerallt. |
