Wonder if anyone here has some advice for LCD/flat panel selection. I don't want to spend a ton of money, but my CRT just died and I'm really thinking of buying a 17" LCD. I found a couple good looking deals on Tiger Direct:

and

I've heard some people say that 'ghosting' is an issue with LCD's. I'm not a huge gamer, but I certainly want G2 to look good, as well as Microsoft Flight Simulator. Any of you guys running flat panels with these software? Any issues?

Not sure if what i heard was true, but anyway.

I heard that they have black/broken/damaged pixels? sometimes, or they go bad and the manufacturer will not replace them for having just a few bad..

thats what ive heard. If it was me i wouldnt be spending my hard earned money on something that if faulty will not be replaced.

Wait for a few more replys , see what they say.

Every LCD monitor either computer or TV has some "burnt out" pixels. Obviouisly since they are burnt out there is no way of fixing them. I work for Best Buy and I can tell you that going with and LCD monitor is a great addition to anyones home computer. Things that burn out a pixel are direct sunlight or home light bulb. In order for a home light bulb to burn out one you would have to have it next to monitor and be using a 100 watt light bulb. Trust me I have tried to burn out pixel and it just doesn't happen. Every screen does have them it is just impossible for them all to work. You just never noticed them really until there are around one another which rarely happens. I have a laptop with the LCD screen and a flat panel monitor and in three years I haven't had any real noticable ones go. An LCD screen is suppose to last between 15-30 years. I don't remember which one it was. To fix it all it requires is another light bulb. The ones it comes with last something like 50,000 hours. So don't worry and buy one. I hope that helps you out man.

i have a viewsonic va720. its a 17" lcd. there is some image ghosting but you have to look hard to find it, i dont normally see it even when playing games like quake. (dont know about g2, i only have rf deluxe)
you should look for a monitor with a high refresh rate (20-30ms or better) and a high contrast ratio, i think a good one for now is 500 or higher.

with lcd monitors, unlike crt's, they are built for a certain number of pixels, if you dont run at the resolution they are built for, the display looks fuzzy (only really applies to the desktop and text, not games / g2) my lcd is a bit darker than my old crt but its only a problem when light is coming from behind it.
lcd displays look cool and take up a lot less space and power too.
hope this helps you.

If they are a good price compared to a monitor then they would be my 1st choice.
I have been using Laptops with LCD/TFT screens for years and the larger once are definetly superior to your CRT Monitor.
You need to go and check them in person.
One thing to look for is the viewing angle.
There life far out live a CRT unit.
A CRT unit will start to degenerate in it's focus (sharpness) after 12 months...you just don't notice it until it becomes bad enough.
Pixel burn is another none issue with LCD/TFT. So the only reason you would use a screen safer is so that other people can't read your information when you are not there.
