I would to know if you guys need 8 channels radio or more for electric heli. Just when I decided I was going to get JR x378 now I can buy JR 9x. The transmitter is selling for around US$450 where I live while x-378 is $240. The radio is for Corona that is still on the way here hopefully arriving soon. In the future I like to get Eolo or Logo10 heli once I learn enough from the Corona. To be honest I don't like 8103 (don't like the look). So either I'll get 378 or 9x. Everyone say that I should get the most expensive radio that I can afford. Well, I want to get a radio that has enough functionality for my heli without paying too much. The more I spend on my radio the longer I have to wait for another heli.
The question that I have is: do you guys need more than 7 channels for your heli setup? Can't I setup a 3D electric heli with x378 radio? 9x looks great and has nice lcd display but cost almost twice the price.

So you guys that has advise and not getting into expensive radio just to follow the trend or just because everybody else got one please comment.

Hi,

I've just been down this road (though I ended up with the slightly cheaper Hitec Eclipse 7). For a fixed pitch heli like my Corona you can get away with a simple 4 channel aircraft mode radio. However once you move to a collective pitch heli (I'm getting an Eolo) you need a radio that has proper heli mode support and, with most electrics, some form of CCPM mixing. It only really needs to be 5 channel in fact (throttle, 3 servos for the CCPM which handles both cyclic and collective, tail). However you may need more channels later for things like remote gyro gain control and even tings like "camera shutter" so 6 or 7 is probably a good minimum number of channels to aim for. In the heli support, as well as CCPM you should look for at least 5 points on both the pitch and throttle curves and a number of such curves (normal, idle up 1, idle up 2). So I think you'd get on fine with th 378 (but the Hitec Eclipse 7 and RD6000 Super may also be worth a look).

comparatively speaking, the 378
is fairly close to the 8103 in software
capabilities.

The big differences are:

7ch vs. 8
8 memories vs. 10
8103 has a much nicer LCD display

add to that the 9X with
9ch
20 memories
7 point curves (the others have 5)
some amount of switch assignability

although I dont fly big electrics, you might
want to consider the availability of PCM
receivers a factor (e-pilots wanna comment?) to keep radio interference
down.

Frankly, I think a 378 will meet your
needs.

hmmm question doesnt make sense really as an electric needs as good a radio as any heli...

with a CCPM heli the higher end radio will give less swashplate dance than a cheapo radio be it electric or glow...

Forget the number of channels its more about processing speed, mix options etc etc...

Always get the best you can afford...

For birds like the Hummingbird, you can get away with a 4 channel plank radio. This is assuming that you will never use anything but the stock engines. If you do install an aftermarket motor for the thing, you will have to fiddle with the gearing to get a proper tail mix between your new motors. If you can't get these to mix with gears you need to dump the hummingboard and get two ESC's, one for each motor, and use your radio to mix the two. If you get to this step you will need the better heli radio of five or more channels. To go up to the top end radios really doesn't give you any advantage with these things.

Once you get into the larger birds, you will want a proper heli radio anyway, even if you can cobble something together that works with four channels, it's not desireable to learn that way.

It's common knowledge that one should get the best radio he/she can afford up front, even at the expense of the heli. This advice holds true here.

I don't undestand, regardless of what JR radio it should still send signal at the same speed. Swashpalte dance on cheaper radio? That shouldn't be a case with a cheaper heli radio. The TX send signal to a RX to perfom certain function base on your input. How that differ? If the more expensive radio have a faster processor which is fair enough, how much faster. Are we talking about 0.01 second here.

8103 on a hummer

I have independant components on my hummers. I do use the throttle curves because of the 3C Li-Poly packs. It keeps the throttle a little more passive.

I also use the revolution mixing and another mix to make it easier to intialize the TR ESC.

One other comment. Try using positive expo (+40%) on the aile and elev. It makes the hummer very sensitive and it feels more like a gas heli.

I do use my 8103's for my gas choppers and complex airplanes. My vario huey uses all 8 channels (90deg ccpm).

I would never go back to a basic radio. I am in the hobby long term and you never know what I could get interested in next.

On a slimer you may want more channels to handle governor, etc. Most ESC's have a governor mode and alleviate the need for the use of an extra channel. So far the most I use on my helis is 6 channels.

When I first started someone recommended to me, not to skimp on 2 things: radio and charger, smartest advice I've been given. I started with 2 decent units, and although, I've upgraded since, they lasted me quite some time. Most importantly, I didn't take it in the shorts when I sold them at all. I started with an Eclipse7 and the dymond super turbo charger. I could easily still be using the eclipse now, but got a stellar deal on a futaba 9chp, so I let the Eclipse go. I know many people that cut corners only to have to buy equipment numerous times. With what I have now, I can't imagine needing anything else.... (Futaba 9ch and Schulze 330's)

I now have a few planes, and one radio takes care of it all, and the charger takes care of anything I can throw at it...

I use an Airtronics RD 6000 Super, I used with my Voyager E, and currently with my Hummingbird and Logo 10 and it has way more than I even need. It has 8 model memory, 3 idle ups, throttle cut, retract switches for planes etc... Is PCM or PPM compatible, it looks awesome and has super smooth and precise stick feel and control.

I really don't ever see myself needing anythng else, I can't even think of what else I would need, I don't do slimers but I believe it has everything I need for that as well. Maybe if I got into scale bodies with retract landing gear and hooks, switches for parachuters and stuff like that I might need more channels but other than that, there is nothing more I can ask for and wouldn't change a thing on this radio. It's also very user friendly and easy to program. One of the things that really stand out with programming is that it labels channels as el, ai, thr, gyr etc etc. so you know exactly what you're adjusting as opposed to channel 1,2,3,4,5 etc.. I've heard of people accidentally reversing throttle channel when meant to reverse something else and spool up the heli accidentally etc. this eliminates the chance for that... I've also never had a single glitch with this system, absolutely flawless...

The best part about it is that it costs a good amount less than $300! With a rx and 4 servos.. This is one high quality product and at a very reasonable price.
