Here's a question for you guys, it's kind of a weird touchy feely one

I'm in the NE, we've had a lot of humidity and hot temps lately, so I've been blaming it on that, but not really I don't think, not sure.

I love R/C helicopters, I think they are awesome even the cruddiest kits are still a good example of some serious engineering for a toy. When I watch my buddy Barbary fly I so wish I could fly like that but I'm still pretty new, maybe on Gallon 10 or 11.

Lately though I've been feeling... non-excited about flying. I can fly FF easily and do loops, etc, although recently my rolls have been turning out VERY badly. The first BAD roll I did(after MANY successful ones) was a non-idle-up and it cost me about $200, the next one I tried after that was okay, and the 3rd one I almost lost it again, the autamaton came out in me and I recovered just FEET above the ground, Barbary can attest to this looked cool, but no recollection of how I recovered it, just kicked in.

Like I said, I love heli's but the drive isn't there to actually fly lately. I plan on going to the rochester FF, to see curtis fly, because I want to see it in person, I have a friend who just got into heli's and I want to help him get going with his stuff and hoping on the side that maybe seeing whqat other people are doing will help rebuild my excitement for the hobby.

I seem to be the type that gets into a hobby, loves it, but then wants to try something else. I did electronics, did some stuff at it, and love it, but no enthusiasm for it although I get enthused on the occasional project such as my heli-lights. I did lasers for a few years, built a couple from scratch, enjoyed it, and I LOVE lasers(so f'ing cool) but I don't really want to continue playing with them, and of course computers I kept growing in those, once I built a 32 processor cluster and ran it for a while, I became completely disinterested in computers.

Right now I am building a camera system for my R60, I am going into work tomorrow to mill out some 'feet' for the camera rig. This will be something new, I'll enjoy it for a while but.. What's wrong? I can't seem to get addicted to a hobby for longer than learning how it works, building it, and then bailing out and doing something else.. This sucks. I love my heli, have a TON of money invested in the hobby(for me 3k is a lot) and I don't know what I'd RATHER be doing, other than flying. It's almost like getting your drivers license, you drive your butt off for 2 years, then you enjoy it, but could live without it...

I've been wanting to do helicopters ever since I started flying planks at age 15 or so. A buddy flew gliders, I wanted power and built a .049 which never flew real great, then some cessna kit which sucked, then a trainer ARF, then a glider, then a F15 .40 size with a .65 Magnum(tons of tail lead) and then a fun-fly barn-door control surfaces type plane, then one of those junk fixed pitched hobby lobby deals(sport 500?) After 13 years I have a heli, which is what I wanted to begin with.

Just throttle back a little untill the weather gets nicer... I am in Florida in flight school now.. and I have to drag myself out to the airplane in miserable heat and get my ass bounced around for a few hours a day... So, the last thing I want to do now is go out and fly my Helicopter.. BUT, I still make it a point to get in at least one flight a week to keep my edge.. If you are into lasers, I have a few year old Mells Griot 15mw HeNe that is mounted on a very nice set of machined mounts... (and I would like to sell it) It has a power supply with it and was built for some kind of medical project that didnt come to life.. I was developing a scanning system for airports (that I found out was being built already) so my experimentation with it probably totaled 3 hours.. It has a shutter on it and thats about all I know.. If you might want it, I'd be willing to entertain an offer...

I've dealt with that guy LOL, he's working on a new system for cargo scanning. He originally tried to market it to the US, but no interest so he tried the Isrealies because the US wasn't eager to invest, then the US Gov told him NOT TO because the idea would get 'stolen'. Now the goverment is showing more interest the project.(holographics radar)

I'm more into the high power stuff, I went from he-ne's right to an 85 Watt Co2, and I have a 3 watt argon waiting for my attention in storage(check homepage). Perhaps I should delve into holography of model helicopters using a micro-controller driving technology interfaced with a computer? LOL.

Hey, i think its preety normal to feel bad about flying when things are going bad. I love helis but a recent crash has grounded me for one or two months(never counted) leaving me without my main source of entertainment. It gets depressing not being able to fly and having been away for so long it gets me thinking about the bad things that could happen when i fly again. The thing is i WANT to fly but just my bloody luck that i fix something and something else breaks(usually small like a nut or setscrew strips). I can only get parts on the weekend so that makes it even more fun waiting a week for a lousy setscrew. Also the fact that i missed the best flying weather(i think) just adds to the fun . Hey maybe this will make you feel better about flying heheh

I am just coming out of (I hope) not really being interested in flying. I flew planes for 5 years and burned about 7 or 8 gallons in that time. I got my first heli a few years ago and would normally burn 1 or 2 tanks a week almost every week (about 15gal now). Then I went to houston where I was actually not the only heli guy at the field and I started flying more and decided I wanted to burn a gallon in one weekend, so I did. That was several months ago and I only flew 2 or 3 tanks since.

I think what also contributed to it is that I had a raptor and it had every problem known to raptors so I was always messing with it, and then I got a Sceadu and set it up and never have to mess with it.

Now that I'm back in MS I find out my flying buddies (yes there are nice plankers have been kicked out of our field (a runway sometimes used by cropdusters) because the jet guys that show up about 5 times a year got in a fight with the cropdusters, somehow thinking they had more right to be there than the cropdusters, which by the way are only there maybe 2 or 3 sundays a year. I found out where the gang flys now and that one of them got a heli so I'm going this weekend and I think teaching someone should help with interest too.

Oh yeah, I was flying better than ever when I lost interest, so now I get to see how rusty I got

This is kinda long but so was yours

Are you ME?

That sounds exactly like me. My friends tell me this is just another one of my fads. Ill get into something and it will consume my life. Lord knows all the things I been into, then I would read everything about it, think about nothing else, and then one day no feel like doing it at all anymore. I know exactly what you mean by so f-ing cool, the kind of cool that isn't to impress people, the cool that you just, for lack of a better/different word, think is so f-ing cool. When I was 13 I loved paintball, would play all the time, nothing but buy, read about, think about, paintball. But my fads are reoccuring. I was obsessed with basketball (so I could be good in school ball), then I was obsessed with lifting. I read everything about suppliments and lifting magazines. Then golf, I would practice all the time so I could be good for school golf, I would watch golf tournements, everything (right now I hate golf so much and just sold all my paintball stuff). For some reason, don't ask me why, im not like a fairy or anything, but I was obbsessed with carnivorous plants and building terrariums. Then I got into helicopter last summer. At the end of the summer I crashed and just didn't feel like fixing it yet cause I was kinda bored with flying and I was about to go to college. Then I saw Good Will Hunting and then I was obessed with geniuses for a week or two. I read all about iq and stuff and real geniuses. I don't know how many other infatuations I have had. Im obsessed with lifting now again (sorta maintained this obsession somehow).

"Your situation, for you, would be concurrently improved" if you took a break from helis for a while and obsess about something else for a while (the first part is from Good Will Hunting). Thats what I did. I couldn't even look at a heli all school year, now I love em again. Sometimes I wonder if I like my hobbies or just buying new stuff.

Make it idiot-proof, and someone will make a better idiot

H34, sounds kind of like it, except for that plant thing (how bizzare... hehe just kidding) Problem with being a JOATMON I guess. I like to know a lot about everything.

I just like exploring new stuff, I may not be able to fly helicopters like a 3D whiz, but I am OK pilot I think. I wanted to know how they work. When I crank up my heli and fly it around it's pretty cool. Still somewhat.. in disbelief that it's ME flying it around in the sky. I never could land a plank without screwing something up hehehe.

I keep finding things to do TO my heli rather than WITH my heli. I don't take it out on long summer drives anymore, we don't go to the scenic spots for a midday hover anymore. If I ever run out of stuff to hang off my heli, this hobby is in trouble.. I don't know where to go next.. Hme made Z-pinch machine, particle accelerator?

sar,
sorry for the belated reply, but i just noticed this thread today. i was wondering if it's possible that your lack of enthusiasm has anything to do with the fact that you've got a good handle on the basics and now to advance you have to fly out of your comfort zone. you mastered the basic skills pretty fast and with only one crash. then the other day when you saved your roll while watching the heli suddenly dive at you nose-in, it was something your mind wasn't prepared for even though your reflexes obviously were. there's a wall you have to pass through from ff and basic aerobatics to do 3-d stuff, and it only comes with stick time. i can see how the more gadgets (and they're cool gadgets) you stick on your raptor, the more leery of crashing you'd become. unfortunately, the best way out of the situation costs $$. if you had a beater ship you could fly stripped and take out and thrash around without worrying about stuffing it, you might be more excited about flying it. it's a relief and confidence booster when i'm flying to know i have an identical backup in the event that i bury one. at least i can take it easy with the other one while i'm waiting for crash parts. anyway, i'm just suggesting that if it's hesitation rather than boredom that's holding you back, you can start scraping together for a backup ship, or you're always welcome to run a cord to my tx when you want to try new stuff on your raptor.

Hey thanks for the offer, we might have to give the cord a shot. I'd love to throw this thing around a little bit and having you as backup would make that a lot easier to do.

Right now the R60 doesn't have much hanging off it rather than the stock equipment, the lights and skids and all that stuff are off it. I even took off the original tail boom and landing gear It could use a GV-1 which I am looking into right now.

I'd love to get a spare, but not in the books at the moment. Hopefully the next couple of months things will clear up and allow that to happen.

I'm really looking forward to the Fury "Really Extreme" 1.20 kit I've been hearing so much about

If you hold up a sign that says "Sar" people are likely to back away from ya! I won't be going to IRCHA This year.

Just do a search for "Sam's Laser FAQ" then look for home built Argon Ion PSU's and you'll find the information you'll need. That information is mirrored on about 20 pages so you should never have trouble locating it.

I've thought about getting an R30/50 to kick around, maybe I'll try to trade out my hummingbird or something.

Ritalin.. hey I remember this from a cool movie.. A Clockwork Orange.. am I right?

Actually you're the second person to accuse me/us of having ADD. I never really had much faith in ADD I always just figured people were different and into different things. I guess I Could dope myself up and be happy with the status quo, but then.. who would I be?.. Where's my pink floyd.. Another brick in the wall, ahhh... My attention span is just fi... ooo metal blades....

They are, but adult ADD/ADHD are very real well. They also cover the entire spectrum as to severity too. It's not like you either have it or you don't like with the flu, it ranges. You sound like you're on the low end of the scale. That's where lots of people are and because of it they never even think to get it treatment. It's so mild they think it's just something with them and that's the way it is.

There's also no reason to get "doped up" and feeling like another person. A good doctor that knows how to diagnose and treat adult ADD/ADHD will have the medication and dosage so the patient doesn't get like that.
