just curious to you guys opinions almost completed my latest project

raven with a ys61 in her what kind of pitch do you think she'll be able to handle???
have another raven with an 0s50/pipe and power isn't an issue even in excess most of the time,, -10 -- 10.5 + at about 1800-1950 she doesn't bog down, {yet} but i dont "stickbang her" but do use the full pitch range,, love the vert's..

any suggestions as to things i might want to check/do to her,,

really dont want to go with a longer tailboom but do use "larger blades " on the tail,, like the quick response and turning,,,, possibly considering slightly larger mains but planning to try her out first.. hoping to turn 12-14 deg. out of her and if you dont want to give any secrets out on RR please feel free to pm/email me

thanx for the reply's

It realy depends on what you want to do!
By putting a 61 in it you will have to run against other 60 size ships.
If your running 600 mm blades you are not useing the full potential of the motor. You will have to find out what the max pitch and blade size you can use to match your power curve. If you add 15 degreas of pitch on take off you had better have enough tail to stop it from over torqueing the tail, A longer tail boom will help this and a good gyo helps to.
But if you can pull hard all the way you have a good chance to win!
There is 2 places where you can win a drag race, at the start and at the finish. If you have a heli that is quick off the ground sometimes you can win by getting far enough ahead of the other guy to win.
My Ergo CCPM Racer is very fast off the ground and I have a good spotter ! But it falls off about 1/2 way down the strip. If I am not far enough ahead I might loose.
It is however a little scarry right before take off and I think it distracts the other racer! As it is turning about 2500 RPM on take off!!!!
As in any form of drag raceing the key is lots of power either by torque or RPM and keep it light!!!
A 454 Chev is a torque motor, a Honda Vtek V6 is a RPM motor both make a lot of power but have to set up a lot different to make it work!
The other key is keep it light!
I had a Mustang that weighed 2200 Lbs with me in it. I could run 11 second runs without Nitros or a blower! it was light powerful and it hooked up like crazy!
Pratice your take offs!! It is everything!! and oh yea dont hit the ground! thats bad and it slows you down!! Dont ask!!
Get a good spotter!! sombody that knows you and knows what drags are all about!!!
3rd you have to race it like you stole it!!! If your woried about crashing you precious Heli then take up Model Traines!!!
Dont be afraid to try something different!!!
And most of all Have fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

tail/torque

so the more pitch the longer tail needed to compensate {easier}
the heli's wanting to spin/twist??correct...so would using larger/longer tail blades help?? running 95's on her now..which is larger than stock.

right now i run a 401/9253 and really like it ,, but i'm not really ,,
well yet planning on racing/drag but just love fast verticals and hole shots,, ok maybe i'll change my mind eventually about actually racing..

but the plans for now are to have alot of fun.. think i'll need to change the blade lengths and tail right away??? and if so

might you have any suggestions???? being as you have experience in this field.... and this is my first.. so far..
i am wanting to still have a great flying heli just want loads of power/ for verticals ect.... and dont know anyone who has even thought of drag racing around here //its hard enough to find heli pilots in itself..

thanx for the replys michael

There are 3 ways to do it.
1. longer tail blades
2. Longer tail boom
3 Change your tail gearing to make it spin faster.

michaelmillikin,,, as you know, a 50 heli twist 600 blades, a 60 twist 680 blades,,, you need 640 blades (good luck), 640 blades will give you more lift than the 600s at take-off, and allow you to spin more pitch and more RPM at full throttle,,,

on my OS 50 I run the larger 60B carb and the large Weston tuned pipe, with 20% nitro I push 11 degrees of pitch at full throttle, she's quite fast at full throttle, but I could use larger blades than 600s for nun-racing flying,,,

michaelmillikin,,, I'm sure you would benefit with a larger carb too !! it would smooth-out your motor some, make it a little more manageable at the take off, but allow you to run more pitch at full throttle giving you much more top-end speed,,,,,, man, I bet you would pull some 14 or 15 degrees of pitch, maybe more ,,,

I can see you now, winning some drags if you found some quality 640 carbon mains, and a larger carb with a tuned pipe,,, better get some 90 size tail blades

Need more blade!! & BEEE CARFUL!!

Hi,

I have been playing around with a couple of 30's with 60's in them.

I currently have an X-Cell .30 with a modified OS 61, and a Raptor with a stock OS 61.

http://www.geocities.com/kingkenny8/3060.html

Had to put a governor on both of them to keep the head speed under control even atlots of pitch.

ALSO - Notice that even my raptor has a METAL block X-Cell head on it.

Those really in-expensive plastic heads are not the hot setup for running all that HP through!

Depending on what blades you are running, you can probably pull as much as your machine has available.

For drag racing, I have been able to run enough pitch to make it POP coming off the line, I think that the blades may actually be stalling!

It is really tough to load up a 60 with 600mm blades.

The Xl has been extended and now has 700's on it, maybe 710's soon.

Please make sure that you have some way to limit the head speed, even though these things are really fast and really neat, they are pushing the envelope.

Have fun!!!!!

""Those really inexpensive plastic heads are not the hot setup for running all that HP through!"" , I agree,,, But,,,

michaelmillikin,,, you could pop a Predator head on your Raven, that would hold up, and with 600s on it, it would give you a larger disk area..
