NBC has finally cast the lead in the 'Jessia Lynch Story'.
She's Canadian.

Yeah that'll win a lot of viewers, eh?

Hero???

I don't understand all the hype about her being a hero. What exactly did she do that qualifys her as a hero? Check out the definition in the dictionary sometime. She was part of a group that didn't follow directions, got lost and got caught by the enemy! Where in that process did she display acts of heroism? It might be more accuarte to call her fortunate, maybe lucky, but I don't know about being a hero. Now, don't get me wrong, I am very happy that they were rescued and were able to come home safely to their family and friends. But... the movie should be about the special team that came in and rescued her ass before she was thrown in a hole in the middle of the desert!

Just my thoughts on another example of what happens when the media gets a hold of a story and uses it to their advantage.

Don't flame me, I'm only quoting news reports that I have read that have emerged after the events.

From what I have read since, the event was blown up into one great PR exercise (don't get me wrong I appreciate how important it is to get public support and good news stories help loads).

Apparently, the vehicle in which she was travelling was attacked and when it crashed she sustained a broken arm and leg. When captured she was taken to an Iraqi hospital where she was well treated and her injuries attended to.

When US forces arrived there was no resistance.

There is even suggestion that prior to the rescue, Iraqi doctors tried to return her to the allied forces but American forces opened fire on the ambulance almost killing Jessica in the process.

Doesn't sound like much of a film to me - though I suppose it will depend on how Hollywood dress it up.

It does seem a bit perverse when the PR exercise builds Jessica into a massive hero, when the American soldiers who died (and continue to die) and those surrendering allied soldiers who were executed by Baath patry members are passed over almost without notice.

Anyway, no offence to anyone (including Jessica's supporters) meant, just observation on what I have read and understood.

Cheers,

Nigel

A Canadian playing the lead? So what?

No different from the Viet Nam Memorial being designed by an Oriental person; no different from American actors and actresses spouting blatant treason, promising to become ex-pats if Bush was elected; and they're still here, not in jail, and still earning their amazing fees.

There is very little sanity, honor, or reason remaining in our (US) culture; and certainly none in the entertainment industry.

So pardon me while I yawn...

And, no, she is no hero. She was made into a public relations figurehead that killed several birds with one rock: a terrible tragedy, a dramatic rescue, and a Woman in Combat- how so extraordinarily SPECIAL!!!

All signs of the times. At one time I was very bitter about **** like this. When the Desert Storm guys were heaped with praise and celebration upon their return, after spending a whole five days (at most) of getting shot at sporadically and mainly ineffectively, I was hurt to my very core. These guys did not go through anything remotely comparable to what I had 20 years previously, and I was reviled for my efforts.

Then I realized that all this euphoria was a veiled attempt at righting the wrongs of the past era; an expression of national guilt, if you will, an effort to give our veterans the recognition they deserve. And I was okay with it. Far too late for me, but at least these kids did not have to suffer stigma and attempted enforced shame.

This Jessica Lynch hype is more of the same. It is like religion; people need something to believe in, to rally around, no matter how disingenous or specious the precept may be. They want their illusions, and reality is an inconvenient obstacle to be ignored.
