Just a quick update
There was nothing wrong with the SuSE disk no1. It was the PCMCIA Card that it couldn't identify and caused a hardware error that broke up the installation very early in the piece.
The message: "There was an error during installation" and then reboot wasn't really a great hint to the problem 
Anyway, got lots to sort out yet.
One thing is for sure
Since when did Linux get so bloated?
I set aside 1.9 GIG and to install Open Office as well needed another 850+ Meg of HH space
I didn't have that to spare so I installed without Office just to see what it is like now.
