Radio - Servo - Gyro - Gov - Batt > Pitch and Throttle Curves - Part 2

Ok, so I have twice tried to change my pitch and throttle settings from what I have had since I started training to the one's suggested by Nate. If I go with the standard radio setup I found six months ago at www.raptortechnique.com/radiosetup.htm, my helo flies great. That is setting the pitch to -2 to +8 with 5.5 at mid throttle. There is minimal vibration near lift off and the helo is smooth and the rpm stays constant. I set the throttle curve at the default of 0, 30, 50, 75, 100. When I try to go to a linear curve with -4 to +8 with linear points in between and a throttle curve of 0, 25, 50, 75, 100 like on the web site at www.natew.com/rcheli/frame_main.cgi/html.IdleX, I get nothing but problems. No matter how I try to adjust the throttle curve, the engine rpm is constantly changing, the helo has no power, it vibrates like mad around hover, even if I try to increase the throttle curve at mid stick, it just gets worse. What am I doing wrong...I have a Raptor 30, JR 8103, Os 32 with a Weston Tuned Pipe, GY 401 gyro and dig. tail servo...I have gone back to my original curves and the helo seems fine but I would like to move onto setting up Flight mode 1 so I can get into some mild aerobatics...thanks, Bill

Curves

I run -4, +6, +9 on the pitch. I smooth out the in between points.
My throttle curve is:
Normal Mode....0-43-63-82-100 .
Idle-up-1...........35-50-65-83-100.

I run an 0S-32 using 22.5% Nitro. I usually hover in normal mode. It's like being on rails when I pick up into a hover. Very smooth and stable.

My guess is you head speed drops too low when you're in a hover. The other tip is get the darned thing off the ground and into a hover. The raptor doesn't like ground contact while running a certaing rpm's. Mine is espeically touchy on hard surfaces such as asphalt or concrete.

I too run the GY401. But I run a 10X transmitter.

Hope this Helps!

Linear pitch curves are good, but not linear throttle curves...

The throttle curve I suggested was actually 60, 25, 40, 65, 100.

That will still need some tweaking, but I'm sure it will be a whole lot better than what you're trying to use right now.

I hope this helps.

Throttle Curve

Nate, is the throttle curve you just posted for idle-up 1 or for normal...I am just flying with normal now...can you really start with 60 at point 1 on normal?....Bill

The curve I posted is for flying around upright, and basic aerobatics like loops and rolls. It's basically a compromise between a 'normal mode' setup (where low stick is 0% throttle) and a '3D' setup (where low stick is 100% throttle and full negative pitch).

You do NOT want 60% throttle at low stick in 'normal mode.' You just want a nice idle.

Over time you will probably find yourself using a 3D curve more and more, until you reach a point where you're using normal mode to start the engine and spin up the rotor, and the 3D mode for everything else. Two flight modes is really all it takes, but as you progress it's nice to be able to tailor different modes for different flying styles. For example I used to do all of my hovering stuff in normal mode, basic aerobatics in idle-up-1 (the setup I described in my last message), and when I was feeling adventurous I'd mess around in idle-up-2 (the v-curve setup +/- 9 degree setup panos described).

For the least couple years I've hardly ever used idle-up-1, I just skip straight from normal to idle-up-2. Idle-up-1 is active, but it's a v-curve setup now and I only use it to try out different pitch ranges or throttle curves before I commit the changes to my idle-up-2 setup.
