I was watching a show on Discovery about the history of the dragster. The used to use 100% nitrometh but they had allot of exploding engines so for safety they run 90% nitro 10% methanol. They said nitro was 25$ a gallow, but isn't it more like 50. Anyways one cool part when when they show a simulation of the fuel injector. It basically looked like someone spraying a garden hose with their finger of the nossle. They said it would use a street car's gas tank up in something like 30 seconds. That sucks so bad. That like 500 dollars for gas "nitro+methanol" for 30 seconds. 20 minute drive to work in a dragster $20,000. 0-330 mph in 9 seconds, priceless.

Yeah, but would it really take 20 minutes in a drag?

"0-330 mph in 9 seconds"

Try 0-330mph in 4.5 seconds. They'll also burn 7-10 gallons of fuel per run.

Gotta love good ol American horse power. Pour lots of fuel in the front get lots of horse power out the back.

Ya they do run Nitro like us heli guys'. Like the one guy sed they do run 90% and 10% methanol because of engine's blowin' up. Nitro is about 20 bucks a gallon. Another thing when it's idling it looks like a garden hose is spraying fuel into it. U should see how much goes in when it's full throttle when they go down teh track. Looks like sumone is dumping a 5 gallon bucket of nitro into each cylinder!

Cars

to all my friends (I guess me too) who are obsessed with fast cars, they just love the fact of controlling something so fast and powerfull. If they only understood how many times more powerfull and free some of the millitary helicopters are like comanche and stuff. Now that would be an ultimate ride.

Make it idiot-proof, and someone will make a better idiot

The guys in drag get nitro in bulk which is much cheaper value than what we get. They often sell slurpus nitro to RC pilots.

Enzo? Bah! Check it out, the world's fastest car, the Bugatti Veyron. 406kmh/252mph. 736kW/1001bhp. W16 8L engine. 7 speed gearbox. 0-300kmh/186mph in under 14 secs! http://www.vwvortex.com/news/09_01/bugatti/index.shtml

You forgot to mention the 240 MPH top speed. Enough to dust off a 5 year old formula one car, no problem. The cars Prost and Senna drove would be left miles back.

I was about 10 feet from that car at the 2001 Frankfurt auto show in the VW hall... What an awesome automobile... and you should have seen the 5 sexxy females playing Big Band music next to it and the Champaign fountain... must be nice to be worth millions....
what a blast....

I heard in the past that nitro was just an oxident and it wouldnt actually burn. It simply made the mixture run "hotter". But on the drag racing show I did hear that about them once running 100% nitro. What is the scoop on nitromethane?

Speaking of cars, jet fuel etc....

Does anybody here in the states beside me remember the guy out west that strapped a solid fuel rocket booster from a C-147 military cargo plane on his car and propelled himself into a mountain at something close to 300+mph? If I remember the story correctly, there was something on the order of a 2 mile skid mark that started out as rubber and turned into grinding metal and finally putting a grove about 3 inches deap into the ground and ashfault up to the rock, leaveing the car embedded, and almost flush, into the rock face. If I recall, the guy connected an ignition switch to the rocket, but forgot to provide a means of turning the rocket off or disconnecting it from the car incase of an emergency. If I remember correctly, I think I heard about it from the "Darwin" awards that are given out to person that does the dumbest stunt to prove that they should be removed from the gean pool.

You can't turn a solid rocket off, ignite it and that's it. but you get a much more explosive reaction and thus much more power over liquid fuel.

As for that story, it almost has to be bullsh*t, supposedly he used a JATO rocket used for short takeoff military transports, I doubt there is anywhere on a car it could be secured which could handle the thrust. The car would be blown apart.

I saw a show a month or two ago and some guy Strapped 3 JATO's (what are on the side of the KC-130 Fat Albert for short Takeoffs) on top of this old ragged peice of crap car. He used a 9c as a Controller if i remember right and he was in a R-22 when he fired them off the thing went almost to 300 i think it was kool!
