Miniature Aircraft Nitro/Gas Helicopters > Mainshaft thrust bearings?

Curiosity has got the better of me tonight. I have been wondering why more helis don't use/need some sort of thrust bearing arrangement on the mainshaft. For instance, on most helis the maingear collar is just pulled up against the lower mainshaft bearing. When flying upright, why doesn't this verticle bearing load quickly wear out the bearing? The same is true for the top bearing when inverted.
On some X-cells, they have a thrust bearing below the top mainshaft bearing. I dont understand how this has any effect, as the maingear is once again pulled up against the lower bearing eliminating any possible movement. What about inverted? Why no thrust bearing(s) for that also? Two properly designed thrust bearings that transfer all load to the outer mainshaft bearing races seems like it would be a worthwhile addition to all helis. Am I missing something here?

Mainshaft trust bearings

These were used to take away some of the yaw tendancy while doing autos without a driven tail. There is no need to use them with a driven tail and the thrust bearing block is much weaker than the standard bearing block.

I hear ya

The XL SE kit comes with an upper thrust bearing. But it also has the split gear. So in upright flight, the thrust bearing can take the vertical loads. But, in inverted, the ONLY thing taking the load is the lower radial bearing. This does not seem to be a problem.

The MA pilots REALLY wring out the Fury with 80/91 engines and the bearings don't seem to be a problem. This is perhaps why MA is not offering thrust bearings anymore.

I am sure the radial mainshaft bearings would last longer with thrust bearings on both of them, but you can buy about 4 radial bearings for the price of just one of the thrust bearings.

I like that there are a few less parts in the fury without the T.B.'s, and the TB's are less messy compared to radial bearings. I suppose that if you never crash and you intended on flying the same heli on the same bearings for years, then yes, get TB's, but in practical terms, you don't need them.

Example: A Bergen Industrial Twin heli carries it's own weight PLUS 25 lbs. It NEEDS TB's on the maishaft and has them. Bergen also put in larger radial bearings (a little thicker).

Custom lower bearing block

Dave, dose this mean you can run the same thrust bearings below that we run at the top bearing block? Thanks... Jay
