MFA 500

In 1987 bought my first heli, the MFA 500.

Ended in tears a short while later when the plywood frame collapsed due to vibration, trapped the throttle open and the rest you can guess. Needless to say it flew a beautiful sweeping circle but ended abruptly as it hit the side of the garage, wish I had it on video, the crash was superb.

Anyway, heres one like it

My first heli was an American R/C Revolution....a red one....fixed pitch, 4 servos, no gyro, World Engines Expert 7 channel on 72.160 with a K&B 40....didn't have an electric starter....started it with a leather bootstrap around the fan groove....later added a belt and electric starter.....from there went to a Schluter Heli-Boy with an HB 61 and still no gyro.

First

GMP? Rebel.... aluminum, 4 channel, fixed pitch, called for an aircraft engine, maybe a 40 or 46? no gyro, I actually hovered it about a dozen times before it tore itself apart after it tipped over on landing

Second, Concept 30, got to FFF, and even nose in, tried to do a loop (can you say "set-up") and it never pulled out - straight into the ground. BOOOM! engine still running and burned up. Stopped flying helis.

Years later, now have Hawk IV and am past where I was with the others, but no loops yet.

Hirobo GPH 346

The most beautiful GPH you ever saw. Purchased it from a Hirobo Rep, built like a tank, flew flawlessly, never an issue since the day I bought it:

my first heli was a beautiful all metal kalt baron 60. I didnt know sh!t about choppers and I suspect the seller didn't either (and I still don't know sh!t ). I never touched it once, he went through it, set it up, then crashed it in the driveway requiring the replacement of a garage door panel.....and 3 years to find replacement parts (kalt changed their distributor each time I got the idea to fix it). I was out a few hundred so I burned more $ on a shuttle (this was all a lot of dough for a 15yr old). I should have done some heli homework and bought the 30 first!

first heli

Mine was a nexus, and ya, it had about as much slop as a worn out swing set, i just cant part with it. Sort of that sentimental thing i guess (sniff) You really learn to realize how bad that collective system is when compared to most machines. As long as you dont try to make a fillet mignion dinner out of Burger King kind of heli, its not a bad ship to relax with

my wifes cooking is so bad, the flies are sewing the holes in the screen door

Hirobo Shuttle ZX
I bought it in 91,built it and it sat for years.
When I bought it I didn't realize I needed an expensive heli radio.
and the engine I wanted was the OS 32 pullstart,at the time $250.
I finally got it going in the mid 90's with a used radio and a mechanical futaba G154 gyro. Wrecked it!
It sat again until a little over a year ago, when I bought G2 and decided to give heli's a try again.
I wrecked it this summer. anyone need parts?

Dubro Whirlybird 505

My first heli was a Dubro Whirlybird 505. Bought it in 1973.

It flew ok considering it's slow main rotor rpm. But started to lose cyclic to the right when you went too fast in fff. Had to back off the speed to get your response back.

Kavan Jet Ranger, First Heli.

My first heli was a Kavan Jet Ranger, With a scale fiberglass body, This was back sometime in the seventies, very nice machine work, but nothing like whats available today!, very little was known about r/c helis back then, gyros didnt even exist back then, radio systems, were dinosaurs!, I wonder what will be available in twenty years from now?

Oh Man, There is someone else who learned on a DuBro Whirlybird 505! My Brother and I were in high school when we pooled our money to buy it. In the true spirit of the Wright Bros. we took turns flying it. It is truly amazing that it flew. My brother went with me to the Phoenix FF in 2001 and we were sitting around eating dinner Saturday night and we heard that pecular drone! We looked at each other and down on the other end of the field, Walt Ferrar was flying a 505!
Our 505 still exists in my attic, I should bring it out and throw a radio in it, just for old times sake!
As they say, from there the rest is history, Cricket, Mantis, Baron 50, Chanpion, Magic (x2), Scout, Junior, Evolution S, Kobold, Xtreme S, Viper, Benzin, Airwolf, Dauphin (x2), Gas Jet Ranger, Bk-117, the list goes on and on and on...

I started with a Kalt Whisper and tethered it to the ground. It wobbled around for a few minutes and I could never get it under control. I gave it up for several years and finally decided to do it right last year. Got a Raptor30 and G2, put in lots of sim time, got some experienced help and now I fly 3d aerobatics!

Started with a 60

My first was a Kyosho Concept 60,

bought it used at a hobby store in Atlanta Ga about 8 years ago. It was painted candy apply red on the top and dark green on the bottom. It needed alot of parts to get it to fly, I hear it had hit a few trees. Not the recomended heli for new flyers. It took me 6 months just to get it off the ground.

By the way, did anybody on here own that heli?

Own it?? I have a brand new one sitting here waiting to be reassembled!!..... Now if only Doug would fly up from Floida and get the darn thing built.......I could go out and wreck it!!!.....hehehe...just kidding...really, I think Doug will DRIVE up...
I bought this heli last Aug in a turn key package that had everything in it ready to fly including fuel!! Got a great deal, never been run OS 61 SX-H and two piece Hatori muffler to boot! New JR 10SX PCM H radio and five 4721 servos....literally EVERYTHING..including a flight sim. I took it apart to check everything 'cause the guy I got it from was a new newbie and made a few mistakes, unlike me...he didn't break anything during assembly though.... Doug was kind enough to send me both frame halves after I broke one reassembling it.....THANKS again Doug......you DA MAN!! Now, if I can stop flying my R22 long enough to put the C60 back together.......I'll be good to go!!........

Cricket...And like FuriousRaptor, we never could get it to hover. Didn't have any trouble getting it up..way up. Getting it back down was the problem! Many sets of blades. Man what a hand full, but it was fun.
