MFA 500...

Howdy!!
My first heli was the MFA 500 circa 1990.. I learned to hover on it, and I don't think it was as bad as everyone makes it out to be.. Soon after I started flying Kyosho.. I remeber those years as the "dark years"..

14 years ago a Shuttle. Quit the hobby after several months of non-stop crashing (no sim, no help).

I started up again a few months ago with a Century Hawk IV and it has worked out much much better. Now we have sims, computer radios, runryder, and more heli pilots

Concept 30 srt. learned to hover myself in this tiny space behind my Dorm at Uni. Seems kinda stupid with the benefit of hindsight. Traded it after its fiftieth crash for two paint jobs on my new helis.

Excellent machine!!!

Morley MXB

My first heli was a Morley MXB.

This had a metal frame, and a very good transmission design.

The engine was up front on the top of the frames, with the cylinder pointing up. The first reduction was by a belt drive to the clutch. The clutch was on the second stage of reduction, so was quite big. This meant that there were no alignment issues with clutch. The main gear was a small oil filled unit, which could turn the head either way.

The main drawback of the design was the control system, and the plastic CV joints for the tail drive. The controls were very sloppy and springy. You had to adjust the linkages and cranks after every flight.

With a modern engine and CCPM this could have been a good heli.

Has anyone got any parts in the UK?

1984 R/C Mantis fixed pitch no gyro with a 46. Surprising that I didn't give up the hobby after that one.

Mine was a nexus 30 bought as a chrismass gift by my wife (before she was my wife). Now I still have it and fly it (hope to put it in a scale fuse) but I also have a caliber 30 which is great.

1973-DuBro Hughes 300

My wife bought it for me for Christmas that year. I built it and never got it off the ground. It shook so bad, I couldn't get it balanced. Had it tethered to the ground so if it did take off, I wouldn't lose it.

Finally sold it to a man named Dale Willoughby who had one he could fly and he wanted mine for spare parts.

Plenty of excitement. Took me 21 years to get back to helis.

My first one was a Kalt Cyclone. No experience, no gyro, AM radio, and absolutely no luck flying it. I sure did crash it like a champ. My first successful heli was a lite machines LT110 and I did learn to fly that one. I moved to a Kyosho Nexus, then a Raptor, and finally I'm enjoying a Hawk IV.

Keep flying,
Chuck

My first heli, which, I SCRATCH BUILT!

I am an engineer-type, so I SCRATCH BUILT MY FIRST HELI!!!!

I could barely fly the thing - because I only had "some" simulator experience.

It was a flybarless, composite construction, electric heli. The only cheat I did was I used raptor blades and blade grips. It has machined parts as well as "Dremel'ed" parts :-). Even with my severly limited heli experience, it flew well. It is very stable, and it can even fly without a gyro, although it's easier with one. I have some pics on my website including a pictures of it IN THE AIR, FLYING!!!

After a while (and a bad crash), I just got an Ikarus ECO 8 and learned to fly --- then got an Xcell 60 (and still have it).

A winter project is to get the "Composite Condor" into the air again, especially since I CAN fly well now. It will be fun.

Schluter Miniboy

Collective pitch
Mechanical tail rotor compensation (nice feature)
No gyro (ouch, I was broke then. I don't even know if gyros existed at that time)
Underpowered
I wish I still had it. I learned to hover and dink around with the thing. I think it was about 1984.

I was looking at your webpage and I thought you home built heli was really nice. How many hours do you have in building it? What are the flight times you got from it?

My first was a Concept30SR-T. I was flying alone with no one to ask. But when I realised that I had the gyro reversed things got better

Then I bought a Nexus46VR - and now several years later Im flying a Caliber30 (plastic fantastic )
