My first chopper was a Hobby Lobby/MFA Sport 500 w/ Collective in 1990. It actually hovered pretty well, but I never took it in FFF.

I used to work there from 1990-1996 (while in HS and College) and did most of the helicopter-guru questions/complaints.

Then bought a Schluter Champion in 1991 and started FFF and basic acro & autos.

A Nexus 30 in December 2000. This was by far the best x-mas present I ever bought myself.

GMP Cricket,
I never did get it to fly for more that a few seconds. Learned on a Nexus Legato three years ago.

Life's a journey, NOT a destination.

MFA Hughes 500

My first heli experience was a fixed pitch, overweight, lead sled that NEVER got off the ground. I had a Fox 50 in it. That thing was sooo heavy that I wish I knew of someone out there that had the full bodied 500 FP and flew?? I offloaded mine @ an auction for a hundred bucks, and gave up on heli's till March of 02 when I bought a Nexus. Can't believe the fun that I was missing.. Finally sold the nexus though

Mine was an American Revolution .40, fixed pitch, no gyro, K&B .40 w/heliball muffler. I got to where I could almost hover it if it weren't for the damn bushes. I gave it up for a few years then bought one of those blue Shuttles.

Nexus30.

Man that thing was maintenance intensive! The tail drive wire would allways let go on me no matter what I did, and the thing had Z bends in it not ball links! Talk about a sloppy control system!

My second was the Raptor 30.

TSK Mystar 60.

I guess it ruined the experience of quality from other machines. It was one of finest and most durable machine even by todays standards.I had enough with 60's so X-cell 30 stuffed with a 46 is a nice route these days

My first heli was a Kalt Baron 30MX.

No, this is not the "plastic" version from the 90's... The original Kalt Baron 30MX was made with a metal frame and a metal rotor head. Funny, but the servo tray was made out of wood...

I powered it with an OS 28F-H (the OS 32F-H had not been released yet). I used the "brand new, top of the line" Futaba G-153 dual gain gyro. The radio I used was a Futaba 5NLH with 148 servos all the way around.

It was a pretty simple to build except for one thing that bugged me... The engine was mounted with the crankshaft pointed up. That ment you had to buy a special 90 degree exhaust adapter. It took me 2 weeks to to find one and order it. I wish the hobby shop I bought the heli from would have told me up front I would need to get the adapter too...

It flew pretty good and took me all the way through foward flight. But one day I was flying it and the motor died. I did the best autorotation I could do, but I bent the heli in half... Since I was only 14 at the time I lacked the funds to fix it.

1st chopper

Dubro Shark with O and R gas converted to glow. Rotor speed was so low and the engine torque so high I never did learn to hover with it. Got a Heli-Baby from Walt Schoonard and learned to hover and sort of fly around. Dubro came out with a 60 conversion for the Shark, and with it I learned to actually fly around. Got a Kavan Jet Ranger and a Heli-boy. With these I learned to loop and roll. Quit about '78 and started again in 2000. Man, this new equipment is like magic!!!

Hele Baby

Had a Hele Baby and a HeleBoy in the early 70's but could never transition from forward flight into hovor so, I added wheels and landed like an airplane!! Gave it up in 74 -- then in November 2001 I gave it another try!! These new radios and Gyros are wonderful things!!
