Concept 30 SX

My first bird was a Concept 30 SX (I think SX anyways). I was 20(ish) not much money and no knowledge. I got my tax returns in and saw a used heli (the 30) at a local bike shop. I used all the money (I think about $650) I had to buy it. I got it set up (sorta), fired it up, lifted off then set it back down with lots of vengence, which created lots of parts.....

I repaied it about $130. Tried again. Created more parts. Did this for 3 tries before I gave up. It took a lot of time and savings to get $130 per crash back then for me.

Put it in its box and let it sit for 10+ years. Now I have bought a TREX 450 and hope to learn to fly it. If I ever get the nerve up, I WILL fly the Concept 30 just to prove to it that it didnt win.

gmp cricket with no gyro! Hey..it looked so easy in the ad, I mean come on if Jamie Far could do it so could I ? right? WRONG!!!!!!!!!!! Lets just say that the Cricket never made more than a few hops at best. My first successful heli was a shuttle zx.

A pair of Schluter Helistars. Essentially, the Helistar was a Heli-boy with a different canopy.

As I recall, it felt very much like todays helis in the air. Really, todays machines have changed only slightly.

I wonder if the non-elevator swashplate and direct collective linkage arrangement will ever make a come-back. It was a good approach. The 90° bend in collective pushrod at the bottom would somehow need to be done better however to meet today's demands I think.

An E-sky honey bee. That I tore the crap out of. It was a fixed pitch heli. And got me started in all this madness.

Kavan Jet Ranger

Mine was a beautiful Kavan Jet Ranger which I never learned to fly. I bought it in Nov 78 after reading about the helicopter some 5 years earlier in RCM.

That helicopter is long gone. But, I had a chance to fly one at IRCHA, as my friend Steve P. (aka Heli_Headcase) let me fly his Jet Ranger at IRCHA.

Thanks, Steve!
