[B]Concept 30 DX

Back in the early 90`s spent £300 on a second hand concept 30 dx with a futaba challanger 5 channel radio, futaba rate gyro ( mechanical)and an os max .28, all this and only 13.
To learn to fly I walked two miles to the local model club, with flight box and Helli in hand, for two flights, then two miles back home.... I was the slimest pilot at that field.

Hell i was happy when i lernt to drive.

My "first time"...

...seeing heli aerobatics was a Kavan Jet Ranger doing TWO LOOPS at the 1974 AMA NATS in Lake Charles, LA. Sloppy loops, blades 2" out of track but looped anyway.

My first heli loop was July 4, 1991 with my Concept 30DX and no idle up

So many heli's - too little time...

Mantis fixed pitch then HeliBoy

First heli was the .40 American Mantis fixed pitch. I had a K&B .40 and Kraft KP-5C radio with O-ringed and ball bearinged servos in it. I thought I was hi-tech! I never got it to fly and gave up on it. I did get to know the UPS driver fairly well. Then I got the Heli-Boy. I polished the side frames with SimiChrome to a mirror finish. Then I installed the SX-81 swept tail boom to keep the T/R out of the weeds. I also fashioned a double loop of coat hanger wire for a tail skid. I wasn't taking any chances after the Mantis debacle. Next I purchased the Schluter Training Stand. And I also bought two audio cassettes of Walt Schoonard explaining how to set up the HeliBoy. I listened to those for hours. Finally it all came together and after many hours of setting up the machine and practicing on the training stand I was able to hover. However that was as far as I got and for whatever reasons I sold out of the hobby for the first time. I wish now that I had those Walt Schoonard tapes! I lent them, along with the training stand to a college buddy and never got them back. One of these days I'll dig up some pictures of those two helicopters and post them here. I did locate a SuperMantis NIB and will some day assemble and fly it as it was originally intended. I would rather have the fixed pitch machine but can't find one. I'd also love to listen to those tapes one more time!

first heli

My first was a Caliber 30
Had the swash plate set up wrong the first flight, so it did not last more then 2 seconds.
It flipped on it's side before ever getting in the air.
Total carnage, bought a new kit.
Had some help on my next heli, and this summer, 5 heli's later, hope to start on the 3D adventure.

A good day????......... is not crashing :)

My 1st heli was a Kalt Colt, mid 1980's.

No parts support locally, so a hammer, concrete did an acceptable job of staightening the mainshaft lol

2nd was a ys 60 powered King Cobra, PCM9 single stick radio.

Heli noobs are spoiled today.

i agree
my first heli was a hirobo shuttle i bought new in 1986. radio was a 4 channel airplane radio with the os .28 it came with. i eventually got a gyro soon i learned of their existence. there were no buddy cords, flight sims or experienced fliers available to me. luckily, the library at my high school carried rc modeller magazine that was infested with heli articles, many catering to beginners. hovering found me in three months.
