Kalt Space Baron (Enforcer ZR)

Used to be sold in a LHS. Learn hovering and basic aerobatics.
The heli was awully cute, and very easy to setup.
Life ended after an engine cut on an inverted flight. It hung up on a tree, and we spent an hour trying to get it down. Instead of fixing it I switched to X-Cell, and never rebulit it since (still have it, most of the parts are intact)...

Super Mantis

Mine was a super mantis with collective pitch. I think the pitch only went from 0 to maybe 8 degrees. Not sure anymore. I never got it above 3 feet. It had no gyro and it had mechanical mixing of the collective pitch, throttle and tail rotor. As you increased the throttle the pitch would increase and the tail rotor would increase. I remember the plans talking about blade tracking and I was like "what the heck is blade tracking???". If I remember correctly the plans were very vague concerning the flying portion. Assembly was decent. You had to build your servo trays out of hobby plywood.
I gave up on helis for a while after that.
Then I got a Kalt Baron .32 powered heli. Much improved kit. I actually bought a gyro and a "heli" radio. Basically again, no negative pitch on the machine. I actually hovered that thing but could never transition into forward flight. The gyro sounded cool because it was a mechanical gyro that had to spin up. You could hear it whining away. Again, I believe it had mechanical mixing of the collective and the throttle. Although my memory is vague on that heli for some reason. I got upset with it and sold it.
I thought helis were impossible after that. I did not have one again for 15 years. I then bought and learned to fly on an Ikarus Fun Pic. I was not afraid of crashing it so I learned forward flight and nose in hovering, etc. It was great. I have since transistioned to nitros.

My first Heli Shuttle XX

I was stationed in Germany in 1982 as a cop in the Air Force. I helped provide security for F-16 aircraft. I was on patrol one sunny day and I saw a F-16 pilot trying to fly a model Heli. I believe it was a miniboy. The pilot was trying very hard and could not get that Heli off the ground. I remember being amazed and very excited anyway; the rotors were spinning fast and I thought anytime now and it’s coming off the ground. The pilot never did get the miniboy in the air. I knew one day I was going to try those Helis. It was 5 years later 1987 when I got a shuttle XX. I was stationed in Cheyenne Wy F.E. Warren AFB and there was not much help with Helis. I crashed so many times the cost of all my crashes exceeded the cost of my Heli 5 fold. It took me 6 months to learn how to hover the shuttle a few feet off the ground; but what an accomplishment back then. Finally got help from a guy name Les Kato Greeley Colorado Don's Hobbie shop. He help me set-up the Heli right. Les sure could fly his GMP Heli’s. With his help I started to progress a little. Then I got a Shluter Champion … all I could say was WOW!! This Heli flew like it was on rails. My skills only got to fast forward flight and that’s where I stayed for the next 5 years 1992. Then got orders to Germany again, tried flying my Helis over there at the local field and the Germans were not happy due to my American frequency usage. My heli’s sat in storage for 4 years, got back to the states and sold them 1996. Got stationed in San Antonio and in 2006 the bug bit me again. Got a Raptor 50 with Hyper 50 and 601 gyro. All I can say is technology is wonderful. My first lift off with the raptor was unbelievable. My tail rotor was LOCK tight!! My third tank of fuel I was in forward flight … my fifth tank I did a loop. I’m now doing rolls and loops like they were nothing. Purchased a Hawk Pro with OS 37 and 401 gyro. Some guys think the Hawk Pro is not a good Heli. Let me tell you … the Hawk Pro is a excellent Heli for what I paid; very stable in flight. Anyone looking for a first Heli and don’t want to dig deep in hip national bank … Hawk Pro baby!! I like both of my Helis; my rappy 50 has more power and will take me all the way to 3D vill and back. My hawk pro is smooth flying and one day Im going to stuff a 50 in her. These Heli’s, radios, gyros have come a long way. I wonder what the future holds … time will tell.

Heh Heh---anybody remember the Cricket---the fixed pitch nightmare. I chased this thing around our local flying field for about two months, with probably only a 5 second hover, liftoff--fight for a couple of seconds---set it down quickly 3 feet from where I started, I bet I covered every inch of a football field chasing that thing. Finally was able to buy a Concept and man what a differance, was hovering no training gear within 15 minutes of being at the field and in forward flight the same day. So as bad as the cricket was I guess it really did its job when I moved to a better heli. No idea what happened to the Cricket, it just faded off somewhere, don't remember getting rid of it, if someone out there has it now, well the jokes on you---please do not return it---if I sold it to you---heh heh--well SORRY is all I can say, it has been 20 years will you forgive me.

My first Heli was a GMP Cobra with an OS45, heliball muffler, and Airtronic transmiter. Can't remember what type gyro I used on it. But that was my very first and last one back in the 80's. Took a long break in between.

I just got back into it this year and it's a whole lot better from back then. More parts availability now.

Heads up, it's my turn to crash & burn , NOT EVEN

GMP Cricket, OS 28FH, Heliball muffler, Futaba 7FGK Radio and a Kraft Gyro. Couldn't hover it to save my life. It flew one time, when one day this guy came buy and asked if I needed help. He tweeked my heli, started it, hovered it and proceeded to fly it around. I was amazed that it could do all that. After that he took out his heli and proceeded to show me how one is supposed to really fly. I sure was lucky the day that Robert Gorham stopped the field and decided to help me. Many years later I purchased a Concept 30 SRX and the rest is history.

My first Heli was a Kalt Enforcer ZR. Didnt have a clue about heli's took it to the LHS and they helped me get it running, (they had no idea either) took it out, flew it for 5 seconds, (radio glitched) and had a tail boom strike, I was about to sell it, and a guy that lives near me saw me on RR, asked if I wanted some help and hes been showing me the ropes ever since, he definatley got me hooked. Still have the Enforcer but now I just finished the build on my New Raptor titan..

First Heli was a MK1 Kalt Cyclone with an OS50. The Cyclone was so smooth and I learned to hover relatively quickly with a mechanical Quest gyro (1986 I think it was). The Cyclone had a smooth (non-toothed) tail belt and I remember pulling the tail boom to tension the belt until it pinged! Problem was with my first crash, a boom strike shattered the CF boom and the belt wrapped itself round the head - messy!!

Then got a used Mk1 Hirobo Shuttle (the one with the blue canopy) with an OS28 - the joys of starting belts snapping at the field.....

I acquired an unbuilt Graupner Bell 47G kit from the 1970s and built it in 1987/1988. Managed to hover it briefly (no gyro, fixed pitch) but eventually stripped the main gear and couldn't get a replacement.

I left the hobby for about 10 years then bought a Morley Maverick XR with an OS46 in 1998 (never got the OS46 to run well.....)

Left the hobby again due to lack of time but back into it last year with a Raptor 50 and now also a Trex 450 XL. It's definitely better nowadays with the new gyros and fast servos.

Still have the Maverick and Shuttle and keep intending to get them out again for a blast around the field.

GMP/Hirobo Cobra

Circa 1989, the first RC thing I ever built and flew was my Cobra.
I still have it in one piece, but afraid to fly it due to lack of availability of parts.
It’s got an Enya 50 with a heliball, Futaba 7FGH Gold Radio and Futaba rate gyro.
A guy at the local hobby shop helped me get it trimmed in and the rest I learned from doing. Nobody told me to use fly bar weights to stabilize the thing while learning to hover. There wasn’t much help around in those days I just went off to a deserted industrial circle and hammered it till I figured out forward flight.
Right now I’m attempting to build an ECO 8 and get back into flying.

My first heli was a fixed pitch GMP Cricket w/ OS Max .28/ heliball muffler/ 4ch Futaba Attack radio and a Futaba mechanical gyro. Learned to hover it in the front yard all on my own. Looking back now that thing was a real handful to fly. I often wish I had kept her though since she was my first.

First Heli

I too started back in the 80's with the HeliBaby and a 8ch radio I built from Heathkit. Heli was purchased from S&C Modeler in Elgin, IL when Loyd Wheeler was the owner and US distributor for Schluter.

Yeah...him!

I also flew with Loyd Wheeler at several heli events and the Nat's. He's the one I was getting all my Heliboy parts from in the 80's. Is Loyd still around? Haven't heard anything about him in years. I got out of flying heli's in the late 80's. I just got back into it 2 years ago. Flying Raptors, Hawks and Tiger 50's now.

Later...

Back in the 70's there was plans for a Polcat scratch built heli. My dad handled the machining of the parts. It was way under powered but I was hooked. Then I bought a Heliboy.
