Are any of you are using Heavy Duty Clutch with good result on the Raptor 50???
I am interested in order a Raptor 50 and the only bad thing I have hear about it, is the craking Clutch shoe problem.

Raptor clutch

I've upgraded my 30 to a 46 and added a heavy duty clutch with a shim and a new liner. While I was at it I changed the main shaft bearings and the clutch pinion bearing as well.

Haven't got but a few gallons through it and I don't anticipate any problems, nor have I had any problems. I flew my stock R30 for a year on the original clutch and liner, no shim was on the stock clutch either. It was an ARF.

Seems like the problems are sporadic, if you install the liner correctly and everything is aligned you should get good mileage out of your clutch too.

90% of the clutch failures are due to alignment issues. Compound that with an excessive clearance in the liner and that takes care of the other 10%. Care must be taken when bolting the engine to the mount and torquing the mount into the frame to ensure the best alignment and clutch longevity.

Clutch

If you stop and think about how popular the Raptor is and how many have been sold to NEW helicopter pilots, I think you might see the problem. Clutches are all about the same. I, think that ignorance has played a large part in the clutch problem. Not that people are stupid, but they do not have an understanding of what they are doing when they glue in the linner. I've talked to a lot of guys that just glued them in, and wham, failure after failure. They don't understand that it needs to be glued and pressure applied equaly around the linner as to make it as close to round as possible. I've heard of alot of fixes but I, think that most of them involve wrapping the clutch with tape and adding tin can pieces to shim the clutch linner to close up the gap. I think its the even pressure that really does the job.

That said, as stated in the above post, you don't just bolt thast engine right down and go. If, on the other hand you will locktight all four screws and instll them just finger tight, then spin the starter shaft; if it spins freely, start tightening the screws on down, checking the starter shaft after every screw to insure that spins with relative ease. Yes, spinning it backwards in the oneway bearing will tell you how good you alignment is.

I hope this helps. Just my thoughts.

Good thoughts Scott. One other thing that may contribute to premature clutch failure is the pinion bearing fit. I had two clutches break in one of my machines and while installing a third I noticed that the clutch bell was really wobbly. I at first thought it was the bearing but after disassembly I discovered that the bearing was just fine. Then it hit me. I had seen on raptortechnique.com that sometimes the bearing was a loose fit in the frame. Sure enough, my bearing was just floating around. One thin strip of electrical tape made it a snug fit. Michael at raptortechinque went so far as to trim his frames to achieve a tight fit but my solution has worked, so far.
