Scale Model RC Helicopters > Raptor 60 Scale Question. (Dampening)

As many of you already know, I've been working on a Century H500E scale body for my Raptor 60.

I will be using my 680mm V-Blades on it and I have the aftermarket metal head with the O-Ring damper update from Rick's.

The dampening is adjustable now by using hard or soft O-Rings or a combo of the two, which is the default setting. A hard O-Ring on the inside and a softer O-Ring on the outside (gripside).

My question is, with the added weight of the scale body do I want my dampening softer or firmer? I'm thinking I may need to replace the outer soft O-Ring with harder one to firm up the head? Am I thinking correctly here?

Thanks,

Raymond

No, go softer. I am not sure about the dynamics here, but I have been fighting battles with over damped heads for a while. The combination of a firm head and low head speed causes the heli to wobble.

The Futura I use to play with had a bump and I replaced the head with a Millenium 2 head and it had double damper rings which made the same heli wobble. The Big Hirobo Lama wobbled until I sent the head back and they rebuilt it with softer dampers.

Dampers

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the info. I will try using two soft O-Rings at first. I can always firm it up more afterwards if it is problematic.

You mentioned lower head speeds. I recall with my stock dampers on my R60 I had a bad wobble around 1500 RPM. The fix at the time was to wind the head speed up more. It seemed to like 1650 and up.

Since, I have gone to the O-Ring dampers and haven't seem any wobble even at lower headspeeds.

Thinking this heli is going to weigh in around 14lbs. would I be better off running a lower headspeed, say around 1500 and dial my hover pitch accordlingly?

Also, with the added weight of the heli should I consider adding some flybar weights or do you think the stock paddles will allow for smooth hovering?
Thanks,

Raymond

You dont need to run a lower headspeed because of the weight. You need to run it because the heli will look better and more scale like. The head and flybar are designed to run at 1500rpm+ and so if you want to run lower, you need to make changes to maintain the same feel. Running a lower head speed makes the heli quieter and smoother.

I am in favor of thicker paddles to reduce the flybar response to control inputs and weights on the flybar to keep the whole heli flying super smooth. I did try some 1" diameter 1 1/4" long brass weights recently aned it turned my Millenium into a bus. It was super smooth flying around, but changing direction was not too easy. Normal after market weights would be fine in this application. You also should consider semi symmetrical blades which are heavy, TG Experts from Ron Lund for example. They will give extra lift at low rpms and allow you to reduce the head speed even more.

Thanks Peter...

Thanks for all of your input. I really do appreciate it. I have the stock paddles and they are fairly "thick" as is. I will try some small weights on the flybar as well. This isn't going to be a 3D ship by any stretch so I do desire more stablity.

I've been thinking about some of those semi FAI blades. Cyberheli has some 680 FAI SAB blades that have a 3.5 degree washout and I may give them a try, they are pretty reasonable in price. I will check on the TG blades you mention.
