e-Electric Batteries & Chargers > Power supply for 2 tritons/Super turbos

Hey all, i'd like to charge my Tx and Rx batteries at the same time and will be doing so mostly at home....I'm thinking of getting 2 tritons or 2 Super turbos, and a power supply to go with it.
Given the max charge amperage of both chargers is 5 amps, a 10amp supply would be sufficient to power both correct? If its a little low, no big deal, i don't have big packs..just regular 2000mAh Rx and 800 Tx.

thanks

just bought a Pyramid ps15kx 10Amp power supply from bsless.com in Jersey. It was $38 + $10 shipping. Has a lighter plug as well as posts. Works great, I'm very happy with it. Pyramid has larger units as well, but this one will suffice.

You would just need to change one of the ends from battery clips to bannana plugs and get a Radio Shack Cigarette Lighter to bannana plug converter (couple of bucks).

For your needs, you could get away with maybe a Hobbico home charger (charges both TX and RX) and don't need the power supply. Although the Triton or Diamond chargers will double as field chargers.

If i could get away with a home charger from hobbico, i would, but none of the ones i saw have peak detection and battery cycling...they are just timed fast charge -> trickle...

correct me if i'm wrong please.

The Ace Digipace Chargers ($80 at Radicalrc.com)

MRC SuperBrain 959 Charger

Get the Triton, Sirius Charge Pro or Diamond for field use.

The Sirius is nice, because you can just plug it in and wait for it to blink. Very simple, can also do TX and RX at the same time. They even make a version that does 2 Rx and 2 Tx at the same time. The others require a little more programming, but not enough to worry about it, Triton is one battery at a time, not sure about the Diamond though.

You can look at some of the RC Car chargers as well. There's a bunch out there, Orbit, shultz???, etc. You just need to spend some time looking. If your not going to go into E-Flight, I wouldn't spend too much money on a charger.

Nope, not going into E-flight for sure...
none of the ones you mentioned have peak detection, they just charge for 16 hours then go to trickle..which isn't exactly good for the battery...

hrmm decisions decisions Maybe i'll get a triton to cycle my packs every so often, and to have as a field charger if i wanted to fly for a while, and charge on a wall wart when i'm i no rush...

Triton seems to be the "charger of choice" at present, there are lots of other chargers and differnet ways to do it. Do your homework and pick what you THINK will suit your needs. Keep in mind that you needs could change, but then so will the lastest razzle/dazzle batterys and chargers.

Go with the Schulze isl6-330d

I would like to jump in with my two-cents-worth. I own the Super Nova, good charger, and just bought the Schulze. For what you are looking to spend it would be a wise choice to consider the Schulze isl6-330d charger. It is currently 189.00 from battlepack.com. This charger is amazing, has two ports, capable of up to 30 cells, 11 lithium, and the new nimh automatic programming is fantastic. The NIMH auto mode starts out pumping the pack quick, and constantly monitors, then lowers the charge rate as time passes. The packs just get barely warm in the auto mode.

I am very satisfied with the Schulze and will most likely sell the super nova, due to the fact that the Schulze is just more advanced and can charge two packs at the same time.

Hope this helps...

Thanks

Chas

Thanks Chas,

That was the one I had in mind, but couldn't readily find it anywhere. It's tough to get a good home charger setup these days.

Chas, thanks for the info, in looking at it, it seems that i would be able to keep the packs on this charger indefinitely, and i could use this charger exclusively since it claims to "match" the cells by tapering off the amperage...
Is this correct?

Actually in reading it, it doesnt seem to switch to trickle when it's done..

thanks

Jason,

I am still learning all of the features of the Schulze,,,,but I am pretty sure that when peak charge completes-the charger goes into a pulse trickle charge mode. I think from what I remember in the instructions that it continues the pulse trickle, but as the battery holds the peak longer-the charger changes the duration of the peak. I guess it detects the point where the battery is holding and modifies the trickle. It is quite capable and is only limited by the user,,,hehe,,,which I will be the first to admit you need to go over the manual,,,and then practice settings. The second port can be modified up to 332mah charge rate,,,this one is more dedicated to receiver/transmitter. Once the second port is set for the rate and battery type you want, you do not have to make any modifications, and it will peak detect just like port one.

I usually use port two for tx batteries as they do not drain out like the rx batteries--and usually put rx stuff on port one,,,and I also use port one for some eflight stuff and it can really pump the juice without heating up the battery.

What is really nice is that both ports work independently of each other,,,you can run a 3DC (triple discharge/charge cycle) on port one and still be charging on port two,,,and both will auto/peak on any of the cells you set it for. Again, I am new to the charger, but have been trying to learn its features,,,if someone out there has the new software 8.04 with more experience then they might be able to offer more info.

Thanks

Nobody knows electronics and power supplies like the amateur radio community. For a great power supply for the money take a look at the Astron power supplies. You won't find a better supply for the money.

Astron Linear Power Supplies

Astron Switching Power Supplies

I'm not affiliated with Astron. Just a happy customer.

You can convert a PC power supply, but I really don't think it's worth the effort. Get an Astron, trurn it on, and forget about it. It's not uncommon for an Astron to be in continuous operation for many years.

ACE Smart Charge + modified PC Power Supply (or any 12 volt supply capable of 2 amps peak) gets my vote. Why crack a nut with a sledghammer - this charger is simple, cheap and reliable for charging NiCad RX&TX simulaneously.

I generally only take 2 heli's - so its no problem to charge one up on the way to the field and the other when I get there. After a flight the 2nd heli is ready. So simple. I don't bother with charging rx&tx at home.

I'm planning to get a Triton once I can dream up a reason for having it - pity is I have a simple variable voltage/current DC power supply that lets me trickle charge almost anything at home and I don't have any e-heli's - not counting an xrb.

A 2A power supply really isn't big enough unless you're only doing TX/RX and you're not charging them very fast. Even the Sirius Charge Pro Plus puts out 1.1A per port. The cost difference between a 2A supply and a 10A supply is minimal. Get the largest supply you can reasonably expect to use. I wouldn't use anything less than 10-15A and if you get a switcher you're not wasting any power.

A while back RadioShack here had a 20A or 25A switcher supply for $69. The output wasn't nearly as clean or as stable as an Astron, but that's decent price for switching supply of that size.

Thanks for all the info, i'm looking for a system that will slow charge my batteries and cycle them and give me some info, the ACE smart charge doesn't sound like it fits the bill, i thikn i'll end up getting a Triton and a power supply...
