Ok guys, the "whip antenna and Carbon blades" topic got my interest up.
Which brand and where to buy it and what do you guys like and/or use on your helicopters? Any likes or dislikes?
Thanks ahead.

I started using Hunter Alpine whips. Unlike the Deans whips, they're potted (it what looks like epoxy) and encased in aluminum. I figure that's probably good for long-term reliability.

I couldn't find HA's last time I looked, so I bought a Quick World Wide whip. Far as I can tell, it's just an HA knockoff.

Revolution whips use braided whips, whereas the others use a single wire for the whip. I'm told the braided form is less likely to crack under vibration, so I bought one of those and I might install it on my next heli. I'm not sure how the whip's electronics are protected against vibration, as I haven't taken mine out of the package yet.

In any case, I'm told that you should make sure the whip isn't able to vibrate freely, as that tends to make them crack. I secure the tips by sliding fuel tubing over them and then zip-tie the other end of the tubing to something nearby. It's just enough to damp out any vibrations, and has worked well for me so far.

I think the ideal would be an aluminum base with the electronics potted in epoxy (a la HA) and a braided whip (a la Revolution), but as far as I know that combination isn't on the market.

Thanks Nate,

I agree, On your "I think the ideal would be an aluminum base with the electronics potted in epoxy (a la HA) and a braided whip (a la Revolution), but as far as I know that combination isn't on the market."

Where do you get either of them? Any online ordering places?

<<...HA "knock-off...>>

You mean "rip-off". The HHI/Quick/Whatever aluminum antenna is a direct copy (sans royalties paid) of the Hunter Alpine; without the reliability.

Irwin's Cloning Department strikes again. The guy has no shame.

Whip

Don't get the Deans, it has a reputation for becoming faulty, warrented or not I would go with the Revolutution. It has a better manufacturing process.

Ditto on the Revolution Antenna, I used the HA an liked them until the wire broke off at the base (the end was un-restrained), The Revolution is in a rubberized plastic material ,both the antenna wire cover and the base. Steve; "Irwins Cloning Dept" LOL! If Irwin/HHI cloned a Sheep the darn thing would come out with two heads, three legs and taste like Liver! LOL Maxx

We have been using the Deans whip on all ten helicopters, for the past 3 years, with never a problem with one of them. Just stick it on with double sided tape. We do have to redue the tape about every 8 months if it appears to becoming loose.

Doing 3D with that?

Alan, are you doing 3D with that? Just wondering if maybe the breakage was due to the hard 3D that some perform with their heli's.

Also congrats on your win at the Circomgyration contest!

Simmer, yes extreme 3D. Never had any cracks. Ive seen and still use it when the blue rubber coating is cracking, thats due to our high heat out her in the Vegas Desert.

I've been using the Deans antennaes for at least ten years, I've never had one break. The blue covering cracked on one, I peeled it off, wrapped some tape around it and used it for several more years. I eventually sold the heli it was in and it was working fine when I let it go. There isn't much in these center loaded anttenaes, just a small resistor from the looks of it. I have never had the solid wire part of a Deans break and I never support them. I prefer the two part Deans, I make a mount out of an angle with a grommet in it and screw the two parts together through the grommet. That little bit of shock mounting seems to stop the blue potting from cracking. I just bought a new Futaba 149DP reciever, I plugged it into the Deans already installed in the heli, and started walking, at 160 feet( the club has a measured lines painted for range checking so the measurement is accurate), I quite walking. As the saying goes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I'll stick with the Deans. Seems like I saw one on Cliff's heli at the Worlds, I figure that if he can't cause one to break flying as much as he does, I'll never have any problems.

Thanks a Lots fellas !!!

I ordered a couple of Revolution whips today while at work. Thanks For all the replies. They are much appreciated.
That's a great Idea Dyehard, The grommet mounting should make it last very well.

I noticed one site recomended that the whip be mounted Vertically. Is this possible or will it matter much?

Thanks again

For the first time I tried a Deans Whip. I took my Fury so high with it that all I could see was a spot and had no problems with it so I'm sold.
