Thunder Tiger Raptors 30-90 - Imperio > setscrew in the paddles.. yay or nay

Is this setscrew really necessary?? My Nexus and Concept 46 do not have these.. I put the stock paddles on while I was building my rappy, and used the setscrews. I went to take the paddles off to put some KSJ paddles on it, and one setscrew stripped so the allen wrench will no longer work in it, and I had to ruin the flybar threads to get the sucker out.. the screw mashed the threads all the way. The KSJ paddles don't even have a setscrew.

Opinions please??

paddles

I think it just depends on what paddles you have. Obviously, the heavier paddles that have metal threaded inserts really need a set screw to loc them. But, as you say, the KSJ paddles are just plastic and I just CA mine in place.

One thing you don't want is to lose a paddle in flight..

Thanks!! I guess as hard fitting as the original paddles are, I won't worry so much about the setscrew next time.. just to stick with a drop of CA...
Thanks again,

I don't know, seems to me like setscrews are a good idea. If you've ever seen people twisting their paddles to make the swashplate move, could just the tightness of the plastic hold the paddle from moving?

setscrews

I like the setscrew idea too.. but wow!! what a pain when the setscrew strips and you cannot get an alen wrench to work anymore.. THat's what happened, and I had to order a new flybar.. Taking it off mashed every thread on the flybar, but I couldn't break the setscrew free. I wished the stock paddles were tapped.. would have saved the flybar since the setscrew wouldn't have seized inside... AARRGGHH!!

Pick up a set of hardened allen wrenches. They will save you great aggrivation. I think Gr8Lakes has a full set for around $15.
Money VERY well spent.

The setscrews in paddles are a great idea. I wish more manufacturers would adopt the idea. Anyone (other than me) ever have a paddle spin in flight? It isn't too fun.

I was going to say the same thing, but he beat me to the punch. Forget bout those cheap allen keys ya gets with them there kits. Buy yourself a set of high quality, hardened steel allen keys and you won't have as many stipped allen screws. That is unless you tighten things down as if you were Godzilla or something.

I've had a paddle spin in flight, it flies pretty interesting to say the least. The set screws are there, why not use them? They help by insuring that the paddles don't twist in flight. Why do you put loctite on bolts? To make sure they don't come out in flight. Anything that is as important as the control system and well being of my heli in flight, I don't skimp.

Another good tip is to have a set of American size allen wreches too. When the metric allens strip, the American size is just slightly larger and catches.

I'll try that Chris.. Thanks!!! I hated to think that I ruined my stock paddles, since I cannot get that @#$%@#$#@$ setscrew out.. even after I twisted that puppy off of the flybar and mashed those darn threads beyond usage...

Spun paddle

Interesting flight characteristics is putting it minldly. I had to use stain remover on my shorts!! If that NEVER happens to me again, it will be too soon
