e-Electric Motors & Controllers > ESC Soft Start

I saw a thread similar to this a while back, but can't find it now so please bear with me.

My problem is that my ESC only has "soft start" the first time it is started after initializing. If I land the heli to make adjustments at the transmitter, I have to disconnect/reconnect the ESC or the pinion gear jumps teeth against the main gear when restarted. Does anyone make an ESC that soft starts without resetting?

I'm using the Phoenix 60, Jeremy, and can't find anything in the setup about soft start... What step is it in?

I spin the main blades by hand a bit to soften the hard start of my ESC. Minor nuisance but seems to work fine.

softer start

There seem to be variations on the theme.I too have two phoenix esc.s The 45 in my Eolo seems to jerk then slow back and forth then burst to fullspeed, the 60 unit on my El-Raven is very much the same.Maybe I could use some advise for it also. Now my Schulz 32.40k has aprox.a 10 second spool up,very cool indeed.Ten seconds seems long but it does no geartrain stress at all.I love the new stuff in this end of the hobby! Kontroniks are a way to go. You can even have your throttle preset on a switch, and it soft-starts to the preset rpm (and keeps it steady in governor mode, compensating changing torque and dropping voltage until the batt's empty -- I've only about 1-3 percent of capacity left when I discharge my used batteries).

Thanks!

I appreciate all of your replies! While we are on the subject of new technology, I was wondering how many of you actually use the built in BEC that is included with some of the new controllers? I for one would like to see the manufacturers drop this feature on the higher amperage controllers. I personally have never found a use for them.

I have a Switchblade, a Kyosho Soarus with a brushless, a Kyosho Ciento with a brushless, and a Logo 10. I use the BEC on three of them except for the Logo 10 - on that one I use the Koolflight BEC.

DW,
I use the bec on the Phenox 45 , kontrionk smile and Beat 40 amp controllers w/o any problems on the EOLO with mega, kontronik hacker and lehner motors..8 -10 cells and lipos
The BEC in the ESC saves the EXTRA weight of having to fly with a extra battery flight pack for your servos and reciever...this is a important feature when your flying a heli as small as the eolo because you want to save as much weight as possible for it to perform well...if your flying bigger electric helis like the joker the extra weight is not critical because it is a much BIGGER heli

if you want the extra insurance you can buy a Koolflight ultimate BEC
you can also order Kontronik ESC w/o BEC they are called OPTO

I Hope that helps you
