Gasser Model RC Helicopters > ordered x-cell gasser, what else do I need?

I have an X-Cell gasser on order. The electronics are no problem, but what upgrades/addons are a 'must'? Temp sensor? Governor?

I'm a novice flyer with a Raptor 30, Logo 10. I'm looking forward to mild aerobatics and skill improvement with the gasser.

Thanks for your time.

Chuck, I don't think you need any upgrades at this time. Learn about gassers and throttle curves, before the GV1.

Chuck,

If you ever so much as ding a rotor blade tip, you need to replace the rotor head plastic center piece with the metal upgrade. The plastic one will come apart when you are least expecting it, in the air and then it's major disastor. Also, it will save you some money on main gear replacements if you upgrade to the MA 0832 pinion bearing mod. It puts an additional bearing on the front of the pinion shaft and holds it in better alignment with the main gear preventing it from stripping.

IMHO, I would not even build the machine without these upgrades as it will save you a lot of greif and misery.

There are many other upgrades you will want eventually to improve the flight performance, but they all can wait until you are ready.

These are my opinions learned thru experience....bad experience!

Hope this helps,

Get rid of the stock muffler. Get the MA#4030 muffler/header combo nice quiet not the stockweed eater sound.

The #0832 front tail drive upgrade is a stock part on the X-Cell gasser and comes in the kit.

Thanks for all the help! I'm going to do the head upgrade for sure. I know I won't 'need' a gov for a while. I am still breaking in my Raptor engine and that is my first IC. So I won't have to overcome any glow habits I thought I would be able to stay electric (I have a Logo, a Corona and a Picollo) but the bigger electrics cost more than the x-cell and don't fly as long. Battery technology is making great strides but I want a big bird now! And my 'budget director' OK'd it so I am running with it.

Next question: Any special tools for the x-cells? I have the usual heli tools and a well equiped toolbox from my days as a fullsize airplane mech (all standard though.) It looks like I'll need a test indicator. Any recomendations?

Thanks again for the advise. This is a great place to meet.

metal head upgrade...

Should I do the full metal head or is just the hub enough, from a durability standpoint? Does the metal hub survive crashes (boom strikes and rollover type)? The plastic head is about $26 and the metal $76. If the metal one gets bent easily I could be better off just replacing the plastic head as needed. I like having the weak link cheap. This is discounting the hassle of changing the hub of course.

I would use the plastic center hub until you need to replace it(crash). I MinAir flybar lock(its different on the plastic and metal hubs), 3mm,2.5mm,2mm.1.5mm allen wrenches, 5.5mm,7mm combination wrenches & nut drivers,a good pitch gauge, a fan puller(you will need it if you have to remove the fan on a gasser) I recommend AMSOIL oil mixed 3oz to a gallon for the first gallon, then 2oz (64/1) after that.

Thanks again for the good advise.

Only one more question (for now, I promise!

Does the engine come with an air cleaner? Should I upgrade/get one?

Seems like we need a FAQ here.

The engine comes with one. The stock carb runs a little better with out it, but you lose the choke and you need a velocity stack. So just use the stock one it will be OK.

Where can I find more info about the gassers?
