Hello,
If you have an Observer can you please tell me the exact measurements of the camera mount? I need the width of the camera base and the distance of the camera base and the top.

This photo shows which measurements I need:

Many thanks,
Angelos

I don't have mine here.
I will try to get you the measurements tomorrow.

5 7/8" wide and up to 8 1/2" tall.

You want the CG of the camera on the cross axle which is 4 1/4" from the top of the "U".

Life's a journey, NOT a destination.

Thanks for the response. I am designing a very similar mount to go in front of my Raptor 60. I will have to cut away the electronics tray of the Raptor to keep the camera and thus the CoG as close to main shaft as possible. Thus I will have to move RX receiver, battery etc on a plate that I will mount ton the tail boom.

With my current design the U mount is around an inch narrower than the observer. It is just big enough to accommodate a Canon Powershot G3 or a Sony TRV110 camcorder. I guess it is ok as the Raptor is a smaller machine anyway.

The 2mm carbon sheet arrived today so I will cut out the parts tonight. I also have most of the required mechanics including bearings and gears for 5:1 reduction from the servo to the camera pan/tilt axis. I am installing the feedback potentiometer on the pan/tils shafts instead of having it internally in the servo. A trick is to add resistors to the two outside legs of the pot which increases the rotation angle. I have tuned mine for just over 180 degrees rotation. Because of the additional 5:1 gear ratio I measured that it takes around 3 seconds for the camera to move from side to side. I guess this is fine and also helps for smooth position adjustments.

I have plans to fit at least two sets of vibration dumpers (soft and slightly harder ones) at different locations of the fixture. I hope that this will help filter vibrations of both high and low frequencies.

I’ll post some photos as soon as it starts taking shape.

Thanks again,
Angelos

My Setup!

This is a home made mount built after seeing pictures of the Observer's mount. I used light weight aluminum and nylon spacers. The gears and servos for the tilting is a setup purchased from www.servocity.com or you can call Bergen and order the servos, pullies and pulley wheel from them. a belt driven setup would pan-n-tilt much smooter than a "geared" setup...hope that helped!!

Ok, here is the first frame of the camera mount. Designed with CAD software, printed on A4 size sticker which was then applied on the carbon sheet. I removed the areas of the sticker that correspond to unused carbon and then carefully cut out the frame with my hobby drill.

dj_hawaii,
gears are fine as long as they are fine pitch. I have a very nice set from an RC car with virtually no backslash. (95 teetch/19 teeth)

By the way... I am happy to send the CAD files to anyone who wants them. The software to view/print them is free but please wait until I assemble my camera mount to make sure all parts fit together.

LOOKS GREAT!!!!

Put me first in line for those CAD files, what a great offer, that's what I love about this hobby, we may not all agree but we are all pretty much on the same wavelength.

Where are you getting that carbon sheet?

Cheers

David,

I got a 800mm x 600mm x 2mm panel from Revolution for £150 + £7 postage. It seems a lot of money but a quarter of that (400mm x 300mm) would cost around £40 anyway. Revolution had a few smaller pieces but none of them was large enough.

I was actually thinking to cut the panel to 4 pieces and sell at least two of them for what they cost me but it is a bit of a pain to cut it. Anyway, if you can't find carbon sheet send me a PM.

Cheers,
Angelos

WOW, that's a lot of pennies, I hadn't realised it was sooo expensive, worth it though. I bet it will be VERY stiff and pretty light when done.

What bearing blocks are you using?

Loving your work.

Twin_squirrel,

The bearing blocks are Hirobo 0402-523 SF Bearing Holder and they are £5 each which is quite expensive considering that I will probably use eight of them in total. To make things worst, the bearings are not included I tried to use of the self parts so that they will be easily available to anyone who wants to make a camera mount. I will post details of all the materials and photos of how all parts fit together.

I calculated that the 2mm think carbon costs exactly £0.20 for every square inch. I must admit that the carbon and parts that I needed cost me much more that I was originally anticipating. I don't intend to start an aerial photography business but I want a high quality mount for my own use. I however hope to do a few jobs to make up for the expensive materials.

Still a lot more to be done but the base of the unit is now ready. Here is a photo. The plate where the camera is mounted is suspended with CSM gyro tape to dump vibrations.

Stuart,
I bought an OS70 from Cyberheli to put in my Raptor 60. The TT70 is rubbish. I'm expecting the new engine to arrive any day now. I also got a QUK metal fan. I hope this will solve the vibration problems that I had. The plastic fan was really loose. It probably had 15 degrees play and a few mm vertical between the plastic fan and the aluminium hub. If the Raptor flies well I'll put the camera on this.

AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Totally AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is it possible that I can get a copy of the schematic (blue print) of the parts and a break-down list of the parts with the cost of each piece and part. I pay for the info if it's a bit too much that I'm asking for. Also would you consider dupilcating another one to sell to me and how much ? Please PM your reply to the last question. Thanks -in-advance

dj_hawaii,

I will post the CAD files as soon as I finish with my camera mount as I am still making minor changes. For example just last night I changed the coupler the connects the pot shaft on gear. I also need to do the mechanics for pan.

I wouldn't even think of making a second one by hand. The carbon is too messy to work with, the dust flies everywhere in the house and it takes ages to get the frames cut nice. However, I am also building a CNC machine. It would take another 2-3 months until i finish that but then I can cut as many pieces as you like

The most expensive part (after the carbon sheet) is the Hirobo bearing blocks. They cost £5 each and you need 8. Total £40 (around US$60). I hope that when my CNC machine is ready I will be able to cut them for 6mm thick carbon or plastic sheet.
