I'm still breaking -in the engine...Manoman, I hate breaking in new engines...but , I have seen enough so far to know that this is one sweet engine...It is very smooth even though I'm running pretty rich with the Camper fuel...
The engine is wanting more pitch already, but I'm biting my lip to keep my foot out of the throttle....Until the ring seats, I'm having to run my lowend open more with the camper fuel..I desided that this engine will never see Reg gas...We'll see how it does...Nothing but autos tomorrow, then I'm going to put Tom's unit in with the GV-1..
So far, the engine has been real easy to adjust...I'm sure this engine will be user friendly for novice with proper setup...

Regards,
Bill

Yea Bill, please continue to keep us informed, as we are all interested in how you feel about it. I especially want to know how much POWER it has!

I've been playing with mine and the camera mount, and have found out the camera and mound DO NOT like my aerobatic setups; not smooth enough, but everything is still going good with the heli.

Bill,
You're right. There is a real temptation to start kicking the heli around a bit as the G-231 is already very user friendly and is putting out good power even after only about 3/4 of a gallon of fuel at 40:1. I am able to start the motor with my Pro-Flex without any trouble (I guess due to a single ring). BTW- Toms unit works real nice with the GV-1. So far the Gator works as advertised and should be a real plus once I get the motor broken in. I don't want to use it much untill I get the motor broken in more and the needles optimized. So far the motor is suprisingly smooth, even being rich.

It will be interesting to see how the 231 compares to a 'hanson' modified 230. If anyone has a direct comparison, let us know!

Steve, Imrich,
I can tell you now that the 231 even running rich has the hanson beat...I know its going to get better, so it may be up there with the G26 when its broke-in more...

John,
I'm running the camper fuel, with the first gallon at 50:1...It wants to speed up at high throttle..It doesn't even care I have 720's on it...
I don't know where my highend pitch is right now, but I know its around 10 degs, and wants to speed up...This is a very good sign

Many Regards,
Bill

Are you serious about the barely broken in G230 PUH. I'm looking for one to put in my Hirobo Bell 47.

Denis,

I might be if I could get a good price for it.

But considering that you are in the UK, and the cost of shipping, etc, I would think that for the price that you might simply be better off buying a new one.

I flew my new X-Cell Gas Graphite SE Custom using the G-231 at the CCRC event this past week end and a fellow gas (other brand) pilot was heard to say that it was " the best flying X-Cell gasser he ever saw". The 231 really puts out the power and really pulls hard when loaded, even after only a gallon of fuel through it. It is also very smooth and will start very nicely using the Pro-Flex starter and a regular airplane Hobbico starter! The single ring makes a lot of difference in starting and operating temperature. The motor is a bit more thirsty though so I probably did well putting in the 20 oz. SE tank !! I'm getting around 45 minute flights .with a little fuel to spare.

I had a clutch bearing fail caused by a wobbling clutch bell.
Do the newer xcells have the pinion screw in the clutch bell now? If so, I need one yesterday so I can bring it to Dothan!
What to do? This 231 will find the weak point

Dang!

Gas Engine Question

Guys and Gals!
I am just now starting to put up a Huey (UH-1B) with
my fellow heli-bud, Rick Simmons. (Of HH-53 fame.)
800 mm mains.
18 pound bird!
4 Pt CCPM on the swash
Full scale lighting (My specialty!)
WIth 'US ARMY Golden Knight Parachutist' release mech!

I am looking at the New Zenoah G-26, the 231
the 230puh and wondering what your experience
might tell me as to the 'best' engine to do the job!
Is the Hanson mod the thing?

Thanks for your consideration!

I have flown both engines, and since I've been doing scale for a while, I would try to run the G-26...unlike the 231, it likes lower RPM operation, and this with the right gear ratio for the UH-! would do better for a scale application....I'm a firm believer in low rpm scale flight Now, if it was a Hughs 500, I would tell you to get the 231

When most 3D flyers start seeing this 231, their going to be wanting one, I promise

Good luck

Bill:
So the G-26 is cats for the Huey!
Am I correct to assume that if I want to put
up the Bergen Gasser, go ahead and tell
Chris to HOLD the 26 and get me the
231 instead????

BTW, I love the 500D too.....!

Thanks again.
Byron

No, go ahead and get the G-26....With the Bergen, I'm sure Larry can make up a gear ratio for you with the 800mm blades..
I mention the 231 because it likes higher rpm, and would fit the higher rotor speed (sound also) of the Hughs...
With the UH-1 you want a lower speed sound, and the G-26 will lug those big 800's perfectly.. I did this with my Jet Ranger. The older G2D would do it, where as the new RC230 wanted to run high rpm..It did not match the model, for as sound....
Both engines will do the job, I just figured you wanted to know a extra edge in doing scale without a real turbine

Bill

Thanks Bill.
You are Correct SIR! I am looking forward to a scale
ship with all the acoutrements!
I believe Rick's other 212 at 20 pounds, is running at
1200 rpm with 800's. He has an earlier hanson mod
zenoah in his bird. Gads, you ought to see a 20 lb
heli do the gravity suck down when he hits that AUTO sw!
He told me it hovers at 30% THROTTLE opening!
He's using a special 100 tooth sprag. We're going with
the 90 on mine. I think the Bergen clutch bell will accommodate
pinion threads in the 9 to 10 tooth range to get the head just
right.
Thanks for your advice.
