Ok, this may sound silly, but I have looked everywhere for this info and can't find it.
How exactly is drag racing started? I have watched races before and seen the helis spooled up, leaning forward, and then blaze out at the start. Are these helis in idleup 1 so that the engine can be run at full throttle with negative pitch to keep them on the ground, and then the throttle/collective added quickly to start?
As I said, this may seem like a silly question to some, but nowhere can I find info on the basics of how this done.
Thanks!

Thanks to rc3heli, I have the info finally. Thank you for the email.
I would think this would be discussed more often, as the starting phase of the race seems to be the most critical.
I am just surprised that I couldn't find the basics of how this is done discussed on here.

Great, now that you've got it, care to post it here. I'd like to talk about it but I'd need the referance material first

I have a friend with a HPI Savage 2D (Darn Trucks!). It goes pretty fast but I'm thinking I could take him if we went with the wind and the track was long enough. I'm sure when he pins it he will beat me off the line but If I knew what i was doing I should be able to get over the 40 or so miles he expects from the truck at full speed.

Comments?

It won't even be close

Your friend is about to have an education on performance!!

You should leave him (or her) setting on the line wondering what happened!

I have raced against modified 4WD and 2WD cars and off road Wheelers. It is NOT CLOSE.

The only time I got close to losing was to a Chevelle 396 at 1/8th mile.

For 100 yards, a heli can't be beat in a drag race by hardly anything.

OK, OK a top fueler goes 0-60 in under 1 sec and a Tomcat on a cat shot is probably quick also.

Let's say this, if it cost less than $20,000 the heli will kick its butt.

Here is the info that was given to me by "rc3heli":

"A lot of races are won/lost coming out of the gate. Most of the time, you fly the heli to make sure the engine is warm and the carb isn't loaded up with fuel.
You land and place the heli at the starting point. Before the horn blows (or whatever else is used to start the race) the heli should be in Idle up (at a high head speed), the collective should be low enough to keep the heli on the ground but not much more (1 or 2 degrees maybe), and a little forward cyclic.
I've seen a guy that had enough forward cyclic to put the canopy nose on the ground. You are correct. You want the blades spinning at full speed before the race starts. If you don't add forward cyclic, adding collective when the race starts means the heli will rise quite a bit before it starts moving foward.
When the race starts, you add forward cyclic and full collective. The quicker you can get the heli pointing nose down, the faster you will get out of the box."

Make sense to me.
