Has anyone out there had clutch problems when using a governor? do magnets need to be installed in both sides of the fan for correct balance? I just installed mine and have broken 3 clutches in about 18 flights. it was fine before.....

i just love the clutch on the raptor!

clutch break

The reason I think it was the gov. was because the last clutch lasted a long time till i installed the gov, now i'm going though them like crazy. after the 2nd clutch i broke in just a few flights, I installed the pop can aluminum liner that i've heard people doing to make the gap smaller. The clutch seated quickly and engaged earlier and it felt great! I thought my problems were over untill the 6th tank on it.....

I'm just out of ideas. i will balance my fan though with a high point this weekend.

Are you now running a higher headspeed using the GV than you were without it? That might be the prob if you have a lot of clutch clearance.
When I install new clutch lining I dont add any clearance I simply rotate the clutch in the bell while the liner is setting to be sure its perfectly circular otherwise it will be oval in the bell if it isnt rotated. Then there is just enough space that at low idle it dosent engage. This way you dont have any clearance probs lateron. Ive never had a prob doing it this way and my clutches are tight and seem to last forever, I had an XL30 I did this way and lost count of how much fuel went thru it after 3yrs!!!!!! My rappy is done the same and Im on gal 6 with a very nice tight clutch and it starts and idles without the head moving in low so dont add any clearance it will run in just fine without making it sloppy to begin with, trust me.

Got one in my raptor, over a year now, and have never had a clutch go out on either of my machines, ever. Must be setup. Im running 1750 in normal and 1800 in 3D with the stock blades.

gov magnets=inbalance

I saw it for myself tonight, I borrowed my friends high point balancer and put my fan on that had 1 gov. magnet in it. It rocked back and forth like a clock till it came to rest at the bottom. Clearly out of balance. Both magnets need to be installed. I don't know if this is what was causing my clutches to break or not, but all i know is even a small magnet spinning that fast can cause some serious #$%!!!!

Raptor clutches

I flew a R30 all last year without a single problem with my clutch (15 gallons of fuel). It was an ARF. I should mention that stock clutch did NOT have the clutch shim under it.

In the fall, I upgraded it to a 46 longboom and went to a heavy duty oval holed clutch and installed a new liner and bearings. Still no problems and I run a GV-1 now on the 46.

I have many friends who fly the R30 as well and none have had a clutch let go... If there is a problem with it, I don't think it's in manufacturing.
